I've been waiting for quite some time now for AMD's quad core (phenom) and the light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer. But what recently cought my eye is DDR3 ram support. The processors are ready but motherboards that support it aren't. In a recent article I read it shows AMD will be making the move to DDR3 in late 2008, almost 2009. It is speculated that they will make the transition from AM2 to AM3 for that too.

So my question is, is waiting that long for motherboards with DDR3 support worth it?

It seems as every day goes by my system gets older and older leaving me behind on performance charts. I'm getting tired of waiting and want a new upgrade :frown:

well, in my opinion, it isnt worth it to upgrade if amd is going to upgrade to ddr3 motherboards...i had the same problem...i wanted to get more memory, but my old motherboard had a celeron processor and ddr1 memory...i just decided to wait and get the whole shebang...in my opinion, i would wait till ddr3 motherboards start becoming popular

Please don't be in a rush to get DDR3 because it's NEW.

As of now with current processors, DDR2 1066 and even 800 offers more bandwidth than can be used.

DDR3 may prove useful in the future but as it stands now they can't use all that bandwidth and there are few programs save for 3D rendering and such that would use it at all.

If you're gaming and the like then save your money and your headaches and grab a quality DDR2 board and save the extra $400

I'll say just wait & get an Nforce 7 mobo.Nforce 7 mobos with Phenom multicore CPUs,PCI-E 2.0 & DDR3 will be a deadly combination for sure.

Oh, I'm in no rush for DDR3 ram. I'm just trying to avoid two motherboard purchases, one being for the sole purpose of DDR3 ram support, that's all ;-)

yeah, thats one thing i absolutely hate, is getting new hardware, and then in 3 weeks, it becomes totally obsolete. i would wait till the nforce 7 comes out like sush said.

I'm going to think about it. If it's going to take them untill the end of 08/beginning of 09 I might just get a "cheaper" board now and get a nicer one later. Cause I know one thing for sure, once those new boards come out, you're going to be paying a premium price for one. I'm not the type to buy things right when they come out. It'll delay my purchase even more untill the prices drop drastically.
