Hi there all. I have a pretty annoying problem with my new build. I'll give you the full-specs:
Intel Dual Core e2140 @ 1.6ghz
xfx 650i ultra mb
1gb 667 RAM
ATI all-in-wonder x1800
320gb sata Maxtor HD
DVD-RW (on ide)
420 watt psu
The problem is, when ever I try and install XP (i've tried a couple of different versions), the computer hangs at "preparing to copy files", just after you have chosen which hard disk to install to. Looking at the specs above, is this set up - i.e. the power supply, good enough to run everything?
Also, the cpu isn't overclocked but accoring to the bios temp monitor is running at 65 degrees. Is this to hot considering the cpu isn't actually doing anything?
Added to this, sometimes when you turn the computer on, nothing appears on the screen and the x1800's fan spins at full-blast.
So from this I have 2 pretty uneducated guess:
1)CPU overheating and hanging the installation
2)Power supply not powerful enough to run setup
Please could anybody help me with this. Any idea's and potential soloutions would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Adam

If you have 2 sticks of ram, try one at a time. 65c is a bit high for that cpu. If you're using the stock heat sink make sure it's properly installed in all 4 mounting holes.

What Slug said, your temps are way way to high...............:ahhhhh:

For what it's worth i got temps like those to start with on my E4400. Found out that my heatsink wasn't mounted properly and one of the push pins had not clipped in properly.

The X shows which clip i didn't get in. It's a bit cramped there in the case so it's hard to get proper pressure on the clip.

It's easier to install the heat sink with the board out of the case.

Hello again. Thanks for all your comments so far. I have tried removing the board and re-inserting the heat sink. While this seems to have got the temperature of the cpu down to a better 40 degrees, the computer still can't get past the same spot.
I have finally found where to plus the chassis speaker into the motherboard (not indicated in manual) and on the occasions that I dont even get to POST, I get 1 long beep, followed by 2 short ones. Reading around I have discovered this is a graphics card problem. This still confuses me as sometimes it the computer boots properly, while others I get the 3 beeps and it doesn't boot.
Looking around the net, I seen that some people recommend at least a 450 watt PSU for the ATI X1800 All-In-Wonder. As Stated, mines has 420 watts. If it is enough, might I have been sold a dogy PSU, or might I have been sold a broken AT x1800?
The biggest problem is that I don't have any older parts to interchange with the new and find the offending bit of hardware - plus I am loathed to spend £20 sending all back to the mail order company.
Here's hoping somebody pull a workable idea out-of-the-bag
Kind regards
Adam

Do you have another video card or PSU you could try?
There is no PC speaker connection on this board. Not sure why XFX neglected to put one on.

Where is that PC speaker plug? Also i was having a similar issue on a motherboard (ASUS) that was either faulty or only supported core2duos with a BIOS update. I RMAd the board and got my XFX 650i instead.

What i would do is go to a local computer shop and ask them to try a spare PCI-E card in the PC, i got a local one to do a once over for £10, he didn't bother charging me in the end. I had exactly the same problem, I had no spare parts to swap out.
My only other suggestion is to get a bootable OS, if you're a windows person then this will work: http://www.ubcd4win.com/
And see if your computer will boot that.
