Microsoft Admits: Customers May Not Need Vista.
Microsoft Extends Availability of Windows XP

" Despite of the fact that Microsoft Windows Vista operating system (OS) is slowly but surely gaining popularity among customers, there are a lot of those who still need stable, predictable and high performance of Windows XP. Especially for them, Microsoft said on Friday that it would offer Windows XP for some more time.

Microsoft is extending availability of Windows XP editions among original equipment manufacturers (OEM) and retail channels for an additional five months to June 30, 2008. In addition, the company will continue to offer Windows XP Starter Edition in emerging markets where it is currently available for the rapidly growing class of hardware-constrained ultra-low cost PCs until June 30, 2010.

“While we’ve been pleased with the positive response we’ve seen and heard from customers using Windows Vista, there are some customers who need a little more time to make the switch to Windows Vista. So we’re responding to feedback we have gotten from our OEM partners that some customers will benefit by extending availability of Windows XP,” said Mike Nash, corporate vice president, Windows product management to learn more about this decision.

Microsoft Windows Vista has been criticized for instabilities, high-end hardware requirements, poor drivers and other factors that may compromise user experience and, consequently, reduce performance of employees. But the most significant problem for Microsoft when it comes to pushing Windows Vista is the lack of tangible benefits the new operating system has in terms of productivity or usage model.

“With more than 60 million licenses sold as of this summer, Windows Vista is on track to be the fastest-selling operating system in Microsoft’s history,” Mr. Nash added, noting that the number of PCs and other machines sold on the market is approximately double from what it was when Windows XP launched."

If we apply moores law to the PC in homes... there are a ton more CPUs to have OS's then at XPs launch.
microsoft speaks of the launch of vista as if its a box office movie. the difference in machines needing OS's in 2001 to now is exponential, Vistas units sold at launch can not be compared to XP's at launch.

for those not familiar with the law...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore%27s_law

I guess microsoft realizes how big of a resource hog vista is.

I think the problem is similar to the HD-DVD and Blu-ray battle.

People are content and don't feel the need to upgrade. To increase sales, they had system builders have it as the only OS you can choose when buying a new PC and the hype about DX10.

Im not sure you can compare HD and OS. I like the idea of HD alot better than standard DVDs. At least 25gig on one disk, higher video quality (im obsessed with hi res videos now), ect. You need Vista exactly right now and making soem games Vista only is really stupid.

I was trying to compare the situation they were both in, not the product itself.

One of my thoughts about it is that a majority of people are satisfied with what they got already, which is XP (or older) and DVD. That is just my take on it though.

Well it is exactly that for me at the moment. I am perfectly content with XP and really do not feel the need to change to Vista anytime soon.

And to think you can get vista notebooks with only 512MB ram. I'm buying one right now and all i have to say about some options is wtf.
Ok i know i can upgrade the ram myself, but my sister doesn't know how to do that, and the majority of people can't do it either.

Most of the laptops that come with 512 like that are getting Home Basic. Not really a RAM hog at all.

Been hearing Vista boot-ups in the lecture halls.

For those who don't know, Microsoft changed it.

I'm still running Win98 on one of my machines. :)

It's 1.5 Ghz with 384 megs of ram so it could run XP, but why would I use up a license on that old hardware? So I'm more likely these days to install Ubuntu than Vista - you get the SAME Ubuntu experience more or less on all hardware, no Dx10 silliness, why can't Microsoft do the same?

Anyways, Gutsy Gibbon is coming out soon, can't wait! :)
