Microsoft claimed one of the biggest opening days in entertainment history Wednesday, saying its “Halo 3” video game generated more than $170 million in U.S. retail sales in its first 24 hours on store shelves, easily exceeding Halo 2 first day sales, which brought in $125 million when it came out three years ago.

The sci-fi action sequel saw more than 1.7 million pre-orders, and more than 1.4 million went online to play the game, making September 25 the busiest day yet on Microsoft’s online gaming platform, Xbox Live. Tuesday's launch did not go off without a hitch, however, as several customers reported receiving scratched game discs due to faulty packaging – a problem Microsoft has vowed to fix.

Halo 3 will be a crucial component in the company’s race against Sony and Nintendo. Microsoft has spent millions of dollars in a marketing blitz to promote the game, hoping to drive sales of its Xbox 360 console and Xbox Live memberships this holiday season. But can Halo 3 live up to the hype? The answer is a resounding yes, based on some early reviews which praise the game’s solid gameplay, amazing graphics, and online functionality.

Thats not the answer i have been hearing i was never really a fan of Halo and i was telling everyone your going to end up disappointed Sequels can only go so far. I have an extremely large number of friends who are Halo addicts So far everysingle one of them are completely disappointed in the game. Even a teacher i used to have also was a halo addict was also disappointed. I have a buddy in gamestop he says people he talks to in the store are also a bit disappointed. They all love the graphics but thats about it.

The problem is that they have put too much hype around it.
People subconsciently probably thought it was gonna be the greatest game of all times the way microsoft has marketed that game.
I don`t say its a bad game since I didn`t play it but I never thought much about Halo.
Its fun but not has big as it should be.

Any PC FPS gamer is going to be disappointed with Halo 3.... simple as that. But, for the console gamer, the Halo franchise has to be a godsend. It has tranlated the FPS genre to the console with much success.

Personally, I never got the Halo series myself, but only because I've been spoiled with some excellent PC FPS (Half-Life anyone?)

Also, like Schwarz said, too much hype = too high expectations that cannot possibly be met = sad gamers.

Just keep driving up Gamestop's stock. That's all I care about.

I have Halo 1 and 2. I thought they were good. Halo 3 didn't really make me want to buy a 360. So I didn't. lol

Halo 3 will also be available for the PC version,i'm sure. So, we can play it on our PCs instead of buying a 360 just to play it. :)

Everyone's taste is different. Personally, I'm not very adept at playing any FPS with a controller... Once you go mouse/keyboard, you can never go back ;)

All most of my friends are console gamers. I am pretty good with a controller but i still rather have my keyboard and mouse.
