PT Boats - Knights of the Sea DirectX 10 benchmark: Performance and analysis
" The final game will support both DX10 and DX9, but this demo is a demonstration of what the final game will look like in DirectX 10. The demo features all the visual effects and some of the highly detailed models that will be available in the game.

Ever since shaders became an important part of the rendering pipeline, water effects have had the most to gain from each extension and improvement to DirectX. Given Knights of the Sea's naval-based action, it was almost inevitable that the brunt of this title's DirectX 10 functionality would also focus on water. With the game taking place on such large expanses of sea, getting the water to look 'right' was an important consideration for Akella, and to attempt to do this they have created an ocean 'grid', allowing for adaptive detail of waves - In other words, to make sure that the sea right in front of the camera looks good, while saving processing time on water in the distance where the quality of the sea and waves are less important.

Continuing with the water theme, reflections on the surface of the ocean have also been given some consideration, and have been designed to realistically reflect both light and objects.

This focus on accurate reflections extends all of the way to the gunfire of the ships - While High Dynamic Range rendering is used to depict the flashes of the gunfire itself, it is also used to show the reflections on those flashes on the surface of the ocean. Personally, I have to say that this is one of the best looking features of this title from what we've seen so far.

Aside from its reflectivity, the ocean in PT Boats is also suitably transparent - In the screenshot above, you can see the distorted image of the torpedo underwater as it makes its way toward its intended target.

It isn't just the surface of the ocean that gets the top-notch image quality treatment - Dip beneath the ocean and you'll find beams of light filtering through into the depths in a realistic manner, courtesy of DirectX 10 functionality.

Moving away from the ocean for a moment, this title also makes use of DirectX 10's soft particle effects to deliver realistic smoke that is affected by both physics and its immediate surrounding environment. This functionality has already been put to good use in another DIrectX 10 sporting title, World in Conflict, but it's good to see it get another outing here.

The final item on the agenda is, perhaps, the tour de force of Knights of the Sea - Its wave effects. Using the geometry shading capabilities introduced in DirectX 10, this title uses wave simulations, coupled with geometry displacement, to make for some spectacular torpedo explosions as well as more subtle wave movements and caustic effects throughout the game. The animated comparison image above shows the results of a torpedo hit on a ship, to give you some idea as to how it looks. You really have to see it live in action to really appreciate it, and this particular rendering feature really adds something to both the look and feel of the title. "
