100GB on a single Blu-ray Disc that will work with today's machines, promises Hitachi

Now thats getting interesting.
100GB on a single disk.
Blu-Ray has to upper hand in the storage departement, I hope companies will start going blu-Rays way and not HD-DVD.
I mean blu ray is nice for those that bought the PS3.

I studied both formats before deciding on HD DVD. The price of the players was another factor. It would be nice if both formats survived though because in the end it will be the consumers who will suffer if one fails.

There are players that play both. Blu-Ray FTW. What i been saying since the begining.

Yay for Blu-ray now to wait 5 more years for the price to drop.

Nah DVDs went down real fast.

Man imagine 100GB on a single disk...
Thats hardcore.
I mean everyone who has a PS3 has NO reason to get a HD DVD player.

All i need it for is storage no matter how many Hard drives i buy and how big they are they fill up. I already have bunch of DVD's burned but Blu-Ray would make things so much easier. Right now i am just waiting for prices to drop.

I would love to burn multiple seasons of shows i have on HD to a single Blu Ray disk. Ah the possibilities.

Your not supposed to stick them up there.....:ahhhhh: But yeah it would be nice to only need a few discs and not 900 of them to do a proper backup.

ROFL, dam i laughed so hard you made the area around my surgery hurt i think you just increased my recovery time.

It would be nice to get rid of a couple hard drives though. Just have what i am working on and what i am going to work on on the drives and everything else backed up.

Oops sorry man. Did not know you had recent surgery.

Yeah less drives is always better. Would be nice to have one infinite drive where you can forget the pain of having to use the delete option and reformatting is a thing that goes unspoken like skid marks in underwear. In time all things will hold more and more. In the future a backup will much more than a colon problem as it will take weeks to do a proper one instead of hours. But this is a welcome step in the right direction.

There is a way to make an expandable RAID array, when in RAID5 you can add or remove a drive at a time without having to backup and wipe the whole deal, just let it rebuild.

I think it was a proprietary controller back in the day, SCSI and such.

Whoa. 100GB disks?! Crazy... and will be expensive... but it should help to drive down current Blu-Ray/HD-DVD prices ;)

Yeah no kidding I can only imagine the cost per disc. The other problem is also time. How long would it take to fill that disc if your doing a backup?

Boys and their toys. This is one of those pissing contests isn't it where they strive to see who can have the bigger disc?

HD-DVD passed blu-ray with 52GB discs so blu-ray comes back with the smack down of 100GB per disc. I say make each disc cost $.50 and then we are talking. I don't care that I can put my entire DVD library onto one disc. I want money in my pocket at the end of the day.

Not a pissing contest, just set out to do what they originaly intended. Blu Ray was originaly supposed to be 100gig per disk on initial release.

I don't care if they fit 200gig, I still won't buy a Blu Ray player....and anyone that has a HD DVD player doesn't need a Blu Ray. I don't have either, and don't plan on buying either anytime soon.

I am awaiting the next technology on this that is more worthwhile like a quantum photon disc that can not only hold 1 or more terabytes but will also keep your coffee hot at the same time.

I remember hearing something when Blu-ray was first coming out about it having 7 layers. Maybe when they finally get there single and dual layers discs will only cost pennies.

Ill be laughing when i have an HD-DVD/Blu Ray player combo in my machine and the DVD people are still trying to occupy many 9gig disks. lol.

Another thing to consider is the potential problems that come with creating any disk with more than 2 layers... Case in point: HD-DVD/DVD combo discs have given users numerous problems, including playback failure even with the latest firmware update :(

I havent had any problems with DVD9s myself. And DVD9s are used for Xbox, some PS2, and alot of retail DVD movies.

Hence my post:

DVD9 are dual layer, 2 layered discs. HD-DVD/DVD combo discs use more layers to include both the regular DVD and HD-DVD content... I am talking about HD-DVD/DVD combo format and not regular DVD format, btw.

wow....100gigs?? anyone know how many layers it actually is? that would take immense amounts of time to write on a dvd burner...probably shorter on a blu ray burner, but still..in a few years, dvds will be like cds are now...and to think that fifteen years ago, we were still using 1.44 mb floppies...

Thats because 15 years ago we barely had computers. The computer age is still rather young actualy. And DVDs will never get to 100gig so you dont have to worry about that one ;) Id be willing to bet Blu Ray burners are about 2x right about now.

Man whatever anyone might say if I can store 100GB of data on a simple disk then when it gets cheaper thats what im going for.
I mean comon 100GB its close to what a lot of people have in their computers on a HDD.

true, but good dvd burners now a days go from $50 USD to $150 USD. Newegg.com has these (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Description=Blu+Ray+burners&x=0&y=0)listings for blu ray burners that burn regular blu ray discs. But the 100gb discs would be stone-age slow on these burners. A burner that burns 100gig discs at a good speed would be equivalent to getting a 8800GTX!!! A good concept, if they could bring the price down to normal, i might get it.....
