Anyone know when there will be an updated BIOS to add support for Intel's new CPUs, or does the current P31 BIOS already work fine?
TIA!
John

Read this and weep (http://thisistech.org/2007/11/21/680i-chipset-will-only-support-dual-core-penryn-cpus/)
It appears that the best support we will be getting for Penryn is for Wolfdale (the Dual Cores) and not Yorkfield (the Quad Cores).
XFX Support Admins, please confirm this.
I am quite disappointed with this development as I expected my 680i LT board (just over 6 months old!) to be more future proof than this. Utterly poor performance from Nvidia. The very least I can do is return the favour and make my next mobo purchase different.

The 680i-SLI motherboards will support 45nm Wolfsdale (dual core) CPU's with an upcoming BIOS update. 45nm Yorkfield (quad core) CPU's will be supported on upcoming nForce 700-series SLI motherboards.

Here is the official response:
"The XFX 680i SLI, 680i LT and 650i Ultra motherboards will support 45nm Wolfsdale (dual core) CPUs with an upcoming BIOS update. 45nm Yorkfield (quad core) CPUs will be supported on upcoming nForce 700-series SLI motherboards."

Thats whats being said over at the EVGA forums. This sucks but most likely I won't be going with a quadcore CPU for a while so I don't really care,.. much...

You can put the blame all on Intel for this one.

Has this issue been resolved yet? I have received an e-mail from XFX Support regarding my 680i LT mobo:-
...we do expect a BIOS update to be available soon to support the Yorkfield CPU`s, with the exception of the Yorkfield Quadcore Extreme. Regards...

The last one I made was with the ISO image from the website (but that was ages back and was the P04 one for my 680i LT). I burnt it onto CD and just booted off the CD. The rest was automatic as I recall. I may have had to make the CD bootable but I am not sure. Check here: -

Do some research on Google so you are sure of what you are doing.

u dont get it do u i just wanna what i pay for before a month a go that is not some cheap mobo and i am not some rich mama boy that have money to buy new mobos every month, and that penryn 45nm quads are same architecture as conroe its only die shrink with some tweaks and sse4 and on all that it draws almost half power then 65 quads it should work with ease on 680i sli i am telling u it can support it but nvidia is hungry for money and they dont wanna give us bios becose they wanna sell us 7 series becose they know we are all tech junkies and will buy it

Yah it sucks man...
I bought a striker extreme for what 250 bucks and ill probably have to buy another board if I want to use a quad core yorky.
But thats part of technology I mean look at Microsoft offering DX10 only on Vista...

Very, very frustrating.
I was very close to buying a XFX 680i until I heard it wouldn't support Yorkfield.
I figured I'd wait for the 780i to be released, now that doesn't support DDR3 and has Tri SLI which I don't care about. Wait for the 790i....I don't think so.
I just want something simple so I can run Yorkfield, SLI 2.0, and capable of DDR2 or DDR3.
It's all about the bucks.

Judging by the replies here, I think some of you may have missed the point of me reviving this thread. Look at the quote above. XFX Support sent it to me - after I opened a ticket about the compatibility issue and asked them about Wolfdale/Yorkfield support - and judging by its content, it would appear that only the Yorkfield Extremes will not work with the 680i LT board, and the standard Yorkfield CPUs will work fine. Did anyone actually bother reading that post?

I went right by "Extremes". The reply you received from XFX sounds encouraging, but I’m confused by post #7 from XFX:
Here is the official response:
"The XFX 680i SLI, 680i LT and 650i Ultra motherboards will support 45nm Wolfsdale (dual core) CPUs with an upcoming BIOS update. 45nm Yorkfield (quad core) CPUs will be supported on upcoming nForce 700-series SLI motherboards."

Thanks for the reply Santino :)
I opened the support ticket about this after the official response that you quoted above. I clarified that the situation as it stood pointed to Yorkfield support being excluded for the 680i boards. The response took a few days to come through so I am wondering if this is a mistake or in fact if it is true. I suppose the best way to find out is for others to send XFX Support questions about this (through their Website Support Centre which you register your name and email and XFX component).
I am really crossing my fingers and hoping that Yorkfield support will happen...

I really like the XFX 680i mobo a lot and I probably would have one by now, if not for the uncertainty of Yorkfield. Hopefully a bios update will come out and solve everything.

I don't know about XFX, but EVGA offered their 780I sli board, to current 680i board owners for $80 and the 680i board, so, I think I am gonna go that route
