View Full Version : 7900GTX - Acknowledged memory fault?

Hi, I have recently purchased an XFX 512mb 7900GTX, and have been having numerous problems with it. I've undergone the usual attempts at different drivers, Windows reinstall, disabling other programs etc, without avail. I then started reading up on the net, and found some interesting accounts.

My problem seems to EXACTLY match the problems had by many owners of factory OC'd 7900GTXs, except mine is at stock (650/800) speeds.

Fault is intermittent, and rarely appears immediately.

In Team Fortress 2, corruption is evident after a while (10min-40min usually) in the form of brightly coloured squares (red, blue, green) randomly scattered over ingame textures.

In Doom 3, the same squares appear after time, often along with black triangular artefacts. The artefacts can get to the point where the whole screen is almost blocked (no screenshots of this unfortunately since it ends in a system crash). Upon exit, the card appears to be locked in a resolution change, constantly flicking the monitor off and on, and the system becomes unresponsive. Requires hard reset.

In the Deep Freeze test of 3D Mark 06, black artefacting appears after time, and the same monitor flickering and crash occurs as Doom 3 upon exit.

I have taken some screenshots of these faults, which you can view at
www.k-designs.org.uk/blocks.jpg
www.k-designs.org.uk/blocks2.jpg (harder to see, green marks below and to the left of the reticule)

All voltages and temperatures are normal (less than 50 degrees under load).

I know the problem of this with the OVERCLOCKED 7900GTXs is an acknowledged problem (it's documented on the nVidia website), but found it odd that my problems are identical to this with a stock one. I've seen how helpful the XFX mods are on here, and was hoping to get an official line on the matter.

Unfortunately my RMA will not be directly with XFX, but rather via the retailer I brought it from, who will then RMA it to XFX, I was just hoping to gather information to make my fault report as helpful/thorough as possible.

Many thanks in advance, and thanks for taking the time to read this, I realise it's not the shortest of posts!
