Hello all. This is a continuation of a thread I started a while back (see "i650 won't install windows.") though the situation have changed so I thought I'd start another.

Eventually, after many incremental steps, I finally was able to install XP on my system (P Dual Core e2140, 1gig, ati x1900, Maxtor HD, 420 Watt) though the system is horribly unstable. I have great difficulty in installing any further software and if the computer doesn't hang while loading XP, it will crash (without restarting) pretty soon after loading. I have tried a new 600 watt psu and a mates ATI x850 card and the problems persist.

This leaves the cpu, HD, ram or i650 as the problem. I need to send one of these items back to be repaired, though this will cost me money in sending and, if it turns out the item isn't faulty after all, service costs. Which one would be the best, i.e, most likely to be faulty? I am leaning toward the MB, though I am so flumexed by this machine (i've even considered that it might be an nVIDIA consipacy against people using ATI parts on their motherboard!) that am open to anything being the cause.

Looking forward to your recommendations
Adam

Best way to test I suppose is to bring your Video Card and Ram to a friends machine.

They will work regardless of it they have an AM2 machine or Intel.
If you have a buddy with an core 2 duo rig see if he will install your CPU in his machine and run some tests.

Just remember to test each piece separately of the others and you'll find the culprit. If they all pass then RMA the board.

I agree, if possible you should try and test some of the components in another system.
