Hi, me and my friend darkorb are trying to set up a server for online games such as counter-strike source, and ventrillo. We were wondering how high of internet speeds will be required in order for the server to run smoothly without any lagg. Currently the internet in this house is 9k-10k download and an upload speed of 650. the computers specs are
P4 517 @ 2.93
XFX-650i
512 DDR2 dual channel (2 x 256)
6800 GT
Antec true power 2 550watt
Alienware case modded
Windows XP but want to try linux

I think the speeds would be fine for only having one game running but you have to make sure that your router can handle multiple connections well, such as if your little sister got on myspace, would it lagg the server? Also check your latencies. Latency is very important.
The server looks good but what game(s) are you planning on running?

Well we will be only running two programs on it actually in order to achieve a the maximum performance possible. So the only game will be counter-strike source and ventrillo. But how do i check to see if my latency is o.k? All i know is in online games i always have the lowest latency but other than that i have no idea. So how can u check the latency, and do u think the ram will cause many problems?
Thanx:grin:

You can check latencies by doing online tests or opening a command prompt (start>run>cmd) and typing ping in and then the name of a website.
Example: ping www.bjorn3d.com
I would ping a number of sites to get the most accurate results.
The ram shouldn't be an issue if you're only going to have a couple of things going.

I would look at getting another 512MB or more of RAM. 512 is going to be used up pretty quickly, IMO, after your OS takes its share, then your game and vent take theirs.
Other than that it looks like you are on the right track.
Let us know how it goes!

k so me an darkorb tried to set up the server but it still would not beep and boot up. We tried everything we knew to try and get the server to run. We switched different cup's in( Pentium D, and a P4), then we switched graphics cards( 6800GT,6600GT,Ati Rage), then ram( 512 hynix, 256 hynix, 1gig corsair), Psu( orion 450, antec 500) and 2 cases and then eventually to try it running outside the case. WE HAVE no more ideas, the only think we could think if is the harddrive but then at least we should see a different boot screen does anyone have any idea's?

If you remove everything and just plug in the mobo and the power switch and PSU, does it POST? If that doesn't even post then something's very wrong with the mobo...

This is the 2nd mobo we have gotten, we tried, mobo/1 stick of ram/cpu/psu/gpu and it doesnt post

Is it plugged in? :D
Seriously I would remove everything (except both psu connections and the heat sink fan connection) and the power switch and just listen to see if it POSTs. If you get two mobos and neither POSTs, then Occam's razor says your problem is with the PSU. :)

tried 2 psu's, so just a mobo and the psu and see if it boots? no cpu/ram/gfx?

Keep the CPU in, it won't give very good POST results without a CPU. :) Except maybe complain that there's no CPU. :)
But take everything else out that you don't need... Just rebuild the machine one part at a time till you find out which part fails.

Odd. Have you tested the PSUs on their own? Do they power up, fan spins, etc?

If you ever get it to work let us know so we can try connecting to the server and see if we get good latencies
