Hello,

this is my first post and apparently it'll need moderator approval. Needless to say, I'm not a spam-bot.

About 6 weeks ago I bought a 7900GS (AGP) from Newegg.com and it kept crashing my computer. I knew it's the card because it gave me artifacts just before the computer crashed, the same way that my voodoo2 used to do after I blew up it's memory. Anyway, I got a replacement from Newegg, and this new card actually seems to run.

"Seems" is the keyword. If I fire up Battlefield2, it usually bombs when I load into the game and try to make my first step. The screen freezes, sometimes the sound keeps repeating, but the computer ALWAYS locks up and I have to hit reset. No BSOD.

Same happens when a 3D screensaver is running (see nVidia GeoForms - sometimes it freezes, and sometimes it reports a "Send Report" error pop-up screen). Sometimes the computer freezes even when I load Firefox!

I get freezes on SuSE Linux 10.3 (with the nVidia drivers installed) and when runing "OpenGL Slideshow" screensaver. I usually keep my computer on 24/7 so I don't know WHEN it freezes but every morning the image on the screen is STUCK, regardless of the OS or the actual screensaver. It even freezes with the "ATI Gargoyle" screensaver.

Is there anything like memtest86 that can test the graphics memory? I'm not getting artifacts, so it might be a faulty GPU but I'm not sure. I've spent weeks trying to find out what's up. I bought another power supply without any effect, now I have to return it...

Power supplies tried:
600W Kingwin (2x12v rails, both at 20amps)
585 no-name (2x12v rails, both at 19amps)
550 Rosewill (2x12v rails, both at 18amps)

-Asus A7V266-E with 1.5GB ram and a 2600+ Athlon XP.
-Soundblaster Audigy
-One Seagate 100GB drive
-3 optical drives
-several case fans

Any suggestions? Anyone?

The only other AGP card I have to test my system with is an MX400 card, and it probably won't run BF2. I'll try it anyway, at least the Linux OpenGL screensavers will work with it.

Thanks,

I take it since your last video card was the MX400 this is the first time you are running these applications on this system. Freezing problems could of course be a video card issue, however it could be related to many other components. I recommend try the video card in another system if possible. If not and you live in the US or Canada I can arrange so you can send the video card here for testing if you like.

This seems like it hasnt been tested. Like what the XFXSupport said try it on another PC. Reinstall the drivers and use the latest Nvidia drivers on their website. For a clean driver installation try:

1. Download the latest Nvidia drivers
2. Download Driver Cleaner (http://downloads.guru3d.com/downloadget.php?id=745&file=7&evp=944289588d7e3bd7968f23a5e41348fd) (Its Freeware)
3. Uninstall any pre-existing or old drivers
4. Restart PC in safe mode and run driver cleaner - clean the nvidia drivers
5. Restart agian normally
6. Reinstall the latest Nvidia drivers - and retstart the computer agian

Also, you can avoid any other problems by cleaning out your hard drive:
-Defragmenting
-Disk Clean Up
-Clearing IE7 - everything
-Using CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds/downloading-slim) (Its a good freeware program)
