Hiya guys
I just built a new rig and i can't get my games running smooth at all, spec is as follows.

Running Windows XP Pro and also Vista 32bit has been tried
XFX 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 DVI PCI-E Graphics Card
XFX S775 nForce 680i SLI ATX A L
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 G0 Stepping (2.4GHz 1066MHz)Corsair 2GB Kit (2x1GB) DDR2 800MHz/PC2-6400 XMS2 Memory Non-ECC Unbuffered CL5(5-5-5-12)
Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Xtreme Gamer - Fatal1ty Professional Series
WD Raptor WD1500ADFD 150GB SATA 10KRPM 16MB Cache - OEM
Corsair Memory 620 Watt, ATX, EPS12V, PS/2,

I have just installed Windows then i installed the Mainboard Drivers, then Gfx, Then Soundcard then windows update then all the extras like wireless, printer and some additional software. I then installed COD + COD:UO. I Left the Nvidia driver at default and cranked up the game to full settings with a res of 1024*768. I had Vsync on so maxed frames of 60 but when any explosions go off the game stalls and stutters as it access's the HDD and the fps jump between 20 and 60. If i crank the Nvidia driver to 16AA and 16AF the game performs EXACTLY the same but it looks a lot nicer. I might add reducing the games settings makes no difference.
All my games old and new are running at high settings but suffer terrible slowdowns and this happens even if i lower the settings. I have got all drivers and BIOS up to date

System wise its all stock settings and its fairly nippy. I can for example do a full encode (using shrink) of a Dvd-9 to Dvd-5 with deep analysis in 10.52 minutes which ain't to shabby. I get a score of 11625 using 3dmark 06

I badly need some advice because i can't see what the hell i am i missing and i am beyond frustrated, so if ya got anything lets hear it please.

Cheers
Mike

Is this the only game that acts in such a manner? If you havent I would try a few other games or applications as it may just be specific to COD.

Hi,
I own over 150 games, old and new from Racing to Shooters and the odd sport game, so a good mix to test and i just can't get 1 running consistently smooth. I plonked my 7800gtx in and the games were performing a lot better, COD played perfect. I put the 8800gtx in and COD was unplayable due to the stalling and stuttering. The odd thing is that i have a game called Clive barkers Jericho and it runs almost perfect, with all high settings it is so smooth but it suffers from Fps drops quite badly.

Yaa, with my 7950GT I can't even play COD or COD: UA. I get like 10FPS in single player, and multi won't even load... It is a problem with the game I guess.

Try updating to the newest WHQL or beta drivers.

All drivers and bios up to date

Edit: it seems i never installed the monitor drivers (17" crt Acer ac711 ) just a bog standard monitor. however, COD has stopped jumping all over but the FPS are still up and down.

Am i expecting too much? should COD drop to 20 fps?

It is a problem with the game... COD should run great on newer PCs, but it doesn't.

Oh Well its playable now so that'll do

Now its all my other games like COD4 Crysis, Bioshock Medal of honour Airborne. They all run with the most unstable frame rates and are in no way smooth. It makes no difference if the Gfx are high or low with the exception of Crysis (power hungry or what). I can't get into any game due to the slow downs and its turning into a fair bit of wasted cash

If the 7800GTX is pwning things then enjoy the rig and ditch the 8800!!!
sounds like that thing is quarky, you made sure to do a full driver cleaning before installing th 8800? or was it installed before the 7800?

Tyle, I dont think that you really understand the situation here? Obviously with an 8800gtx and a Q6600 he shouldnt be getting jerky games and massive slowdowns. How can he possibly enjoy his rig when there is something wrong with it :S

Edit: My bad didnt see page 2 lol. I'll think of something else to say now hehe...

...Do you have any anti-virus software installed that may be randomly chewing resources or wanting to do file scans every time one is being accessed? I know AVG hates FEAR since one of their updates...

westy87, no no AV or Firewall for that matter
Tyle, i bought a 8800GTX to not have to use my 7800GTX, i can't enjoy one single game, except for Jericho (still slows down which is annoying) and COD...just. I have other PC's each with there own use, this one is for gaming and thats it, it just won't behave.
Miker, i have turned of Vsync but they still jump and slowdown.

Edit: Might add, i ought 2 big XFX Products and i never got a single sticker, yes i know its only a sticker but i like them on my case, got me 2 copys of Lost Planet though :-)

It has to be either something in the system slowing it down or a problem with the video card. If you live in North or South America I will be more then happy to arrange an RMA so you can send the video card here for testing, then we can at least know where the problem may lie.
