View Full Version : Just broke the 12k barrier in 3DMark06

Hi guys!
After keeping my 8800GTX @stock levels since the time I bought it (except for one short time I tried to slightly overclock it), I've decided today to overclock it.
I reached a moderate overclock of 625/2000 (actually 621/1998) and gained 12023 points in 3DMark06, that is of course with my E6600 overclocked to 3.2GHz (8x400).
I could go higher, but since I want to keep this overclock 24/7, I decided not to...;-)
You can read more about my 8800GTX overclock and 3DMark06 score in the "3DMark Benchmark" Thread...:icon_tiphat:

Congrats Zachig, I personally am just trying to break the 5k barrier

What is your normal score zachig without overclocking? My normal score without overclocking is at about 5400, and now when my processor is overclocked I am getting about 6900. My barrier that I want to beat is 7K. But I bet I will be able to beat the 10K barrier once I get my new Quad-Core processor in January. :)

My "normal" score, without my 8800GTX overclocked, but with my E6600 overclocked is 11311 Pts.
Now with both my 8800GTX and E6600 at stock level, I was getting around ~10400 Pts, if I remember right...

With my 3000+ and single 7950GT i was breaking 6k. With a dual core CPU im break 7500. Single card.

I have just done the same. I have an Asus P5N-E SLI, E6600, 8800GTX.
I am runnibg at 9*337.5 =3037.6. Just over 3ghz core voltage 1.46v
My card is on 614/978
My 3dmark 06 is 12036.
I have plenty to go at yet but I am just doing a bit at a time and seeing if my computer is stable.
Running Crysis my GPU is 71C motherboard and CPU are 51C
At idle I am at about 60C and cpu 39c motherboard 42C
I think these appear reasonable.

I have just been overclocking also. I have Asus P5N-E-SLI. E6600, 8800GTX.
My CPU is clocked at 9*337.5= 3037.6ghz Core 1.46v
GPU 614/978
My 3DMARK06 is 12036
I still have plenty to go at but I am checking my computer is perfectly stable before going any further.
My temperatures playing Crysis are GPU 71C Motherboard and Cpu 51C.
Sorry about the double post. I thought something had gone wrong as my first didn't show. I didn't realise that a moderator had topass it.

Yeah...WELCOME ABOARD Simon11, we're glad to have you here!
Hehehe...It's nice to see that we share the same combo: E6600, ASUS P5N-E and 8800GTX. ;-)
Ejoy your stay and stick around...:icon_tiphat:

I was wondering if you can tell me the temperatures you are getting and if you have altered any voltages getting to 3.2 GHZ. Also have you altered anything on your 8800GTX before overclocking it?

Since it's the beginning of winter time now in Israel where I live, temps are around 10C-11C outside, so it helps my case/cpu/gpu to keep being cool.
On summer time:
- My (overclocked) CPU idled at around 33C-35C, while never reached 47C on maximum load.
- The 8800GTX (before overclocking it) idled at around 53C and never reaches above 71C on maximum LOAD.
Now on winter time:
- My (overclocked) CPU idles at around 30C-32C, while never reached 44C on maximum load.
- The 8800GTX (AFTER overclocking it) idles at around 42C and never reaches above 76C on maximum LOAD.
In order to reach a 3.2GHz (4x800) of my E6600 CPU, I had to up the Vcore to 1.45V (I've set the Vcore to 1.35V, but also set the "CPU Offest Voltage" to +100mV, so in total it's 1.45V).
I keep my Northbridge Voltage at 1.393V (it's stable enough, so I don't see any reason upping it to 1.563V).
And for the GPU, I haven't altered anything in the Card itself, except that I'm running my Video Card fan @100% Speed 24/7, using RivaTuner. ;-)
Oh...and I have a Vantec Tornado 92mm Fan, installed, on the side windows, blowing air on the Video Card(volt modded to work @5V instead of 12V, since the noise it makes when it's working @12V is TOTALLY UNBEARABLE, like a JET PLANE inside your case).
I think that only the Vantec Tornado decreased the Video Card temps by more than 10C degrees since the time I installed it.
Hope this helps...:icon_tiphat:
If you have further questions, don't hesitate to ask...;-)

Thanks a lot for your detailed reply. I find it very informative. I just have a couple of other questions if that is o/k. You say you left your Northbridge volktage at 1.393 volts. Is this the default voltage! I haven't touched mine yet, I think it is on auto.
At 3.GHZ I now and again get a blue screen although my vcore is 1.46v
I was thinking I might have to raise the NB voltage to stop this.
Also the 5v mod on the fan! Is this just to slow the fan down? Would a fan speed controller do the same thing?
Thanks
Simon.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that 1.393V is the default voltage, but I set it manually to 1.393V since I don't trust the "AUTO" option.
Of course, if you have some instability problems, raising the NB Voltage to 1.563V might make your overclock more stable, but I wouldn't up the NB Voltage without actively cooling the NB Chipset.
I have mine air-cooled with Thermaltake Extreme Spirit II Chipset Cooler. I'm pretty satisfied with it, though I know the Thermalright HR-05 is better.
Also the 5v mod on the fan! Is this just to slow the fan down? Would a fan speed controller do the same thing?
It's actually the same, but since I don't have a fan speed controller, I've decided to volt mod instead...;-)
And beside that...that specific Vantec Tornado draws a huge amount of power/current, so I'm not sure if just any Fan Controller would do the work, as for this fan, believe me, you need a Fan controller that can handle high currents...

Zachig!
Thanks for the reply. Yes I thought that maybe the NB would need extra cooling. I am quite happy with my speeds at the moment but if I decide to go higher I will either try upping the core a bit more as I know some have been up to 1.55 & higher. They reckon it's pretty safe as high as 1.5v on stock cooling. Or I will get a cooler for the Northbridge.
I have just ordered an AKASA ultra quiet 120mm fan for my side window. It is only about 18dbd so it should be ok. I think it shifts about 44cm of air though.
Sushrukh!
Thanks for the comments! Happy overclocking!

Thanks.
I have jsut ordered one of these also. It will be interesting to see if it is any good at cooling the NB. If not I will do what you have done but this will save me taking out the mobo.

not bad at all . that gtx is capable of 13k on a core 2 duo 6600 . the best cooler for those cards is a thermalright hr03+ . granted its huge , as i am currently using one on my 2900xt .
