View Full Version : Microsoft Windows XP SP3 RC Does NOT Support High Definition Audio

In Windows XP, if we need to run a High Definition Audio (HDA) device, we would have to install the Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) driver. However, this does NOT work for the latest Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate Release.

If you've already tried installing the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Release Candidate v3264 with a High Definition Audio (HDA) device in your computer, I'll bet you have encountered problems with the audio drivers as I did.

"When you try installing the KB888111 which works for SP1 and SP2, it will not work for Service Pack 3, at least for the current SP3 RC v3264. Instead, you will be prompted with a message saying that the current service pack installed is newer than the fix you are trying to apply. Even the older KB835221 does not work."

If this is true, then it's a problem because a lot of us are still using the onboard HD audio.

Simple solution, don't installed SP3.
or,

You can try tinkering with the Universal Audio Architecture driver's INF file to make your Windows XP SP3 think that the driver is meant to be installed on Service Pack 3. redxii from MSFN forum did just that and created a modified KB888111 driver which is available for download. Before I tried it out, I found that the feedbacks were all positive!

I tried it on my Windows XP SP3 system and it worked! Just download the 7z (7zip) file or zip file below, extract it and then right-click at the ? mark at the Device Manager where your High Definition Audio (HDA) device is located and reinstall the driver by pointing to the folder you extracted the files to. After that's done, install the audio driver for your motherboard. That's it!

If you need the fix (or add-on, as it's called), you can download it from any one of the two links below. Have fun with Service Pack 3!

Wow I think microsoft is really trying to screw people over with sp3 so people try and switch to Vista.

Exactly what I am thinking...SABOTAGE!!! First its the HD audio, then your screen flickers, then it's telling you to burn your parents in their sleep....GAHHHHHH! But seriously I am thinking this would be a great opportunity for them to make such a move. Tis why I am waiting.

I think you are lucky coz it's only creating problems in onboard HD audios but you are using an Audigy.

SP2 FTW, not only that this is only a release candidate. Not final. I have HD onboard, but it gives me problems anyways. So idc.

I have been on SP3 for a month too and got no problems. My dad has a P35 board with HD Audio quality. No problem with it.

actually, no, because a few months back my dad moved back to France, and I use skype often, so I use the front audio ports for my headset/microphone, and I can't get them to work with the audigy....

point being, I run sp3 with my onboard realtek.....works like a charm
I'm just lucky I guess

No. Alpha, beta, release candidate. Its the final stages before being released to the public fully. Betas are more buggy.

Ive never tried the vista beta, and I cant really imagine vista with anymore problems then it had when it first came out.

I actually don't have any real issues with Vista other than the mouse scrolling speed not being fast enough for my liking. I pretty much customized it to way I want to look and whatnot.

Yeah Vista is quite ok for me too.Little bit slow than XP but stable & less error messages & BSODs.

It's been now a week that I was searching for a solution to my sound problem. I installed a fresh version of Windows XP. While using the Microsoft update I noticed that there were 96 critical updates that were pending installation. So I figured installing the Service Pack 3 would include all of these. And I did install SP3 before installing my Drivers. Then HP update was next and sure enough I found and installed all of the drivers needed BUT the Sound card one. From that point on I realized that there is a problem while installing the UAA Drivers since it specified that it is for SP2, plus nothing changed after I installed it. Finally, after dealing with numerous INCOMPETANT HP customer service representatives and A LOT of hours of frustration I found this topic and sure enough my problem is solved!!!

I’m so grateful that I had to join and express my thanks!

I’m running on:
HP Pavilion DV2020ca Notebook
Windows XP Pro. SP3
Nvidia Graphics, Conexant HD audio
