View Full Version : Cheap SLI vs. Single 8800

I put in a fairly cheap XFX GeForce 8600GT 512MB 128-bit GDDR2 into my build back in October. The same card is now $89 (after rebates). Is it worth putting a second one of these in SLI? Or, should I just wait and save my pennies and put in an 8800 in the summer?

Just looking for opinions.

Thanks.

Personally, I'd just go with an 8800GT. Single card is gonna be faster than most 8600 in SLI.

I second, ditch the 8600 and go for a 8800 flavor card.
Its gona be more than twice as fast (than an 8600 sli setup), I'm sure.

Agreed. Look at the review just posted for the HD3870x2 from AMD. It has two GPU's and a single 8800 GTS benches better than it except at the highest resolutions (1900x1200). Imagine how two 8600's would fare.

8800GT is the wiser choice.

Thanks, all. That is exactly what I needed to know. In hind sight, I should off sprung for a higher end card right off the bat and then added to it later.

I wasn't really up on current hardware when I started my build either. Luckily, the guy at the shop I decided to get the parts from informed me and sold me on the 8800GT. I'm quite happy with it. Might even go get another one(if I find $300 just laying around)

Or if you've got time, wait a little bit and see what nVidia has in store for us in the next few months.
