Sorry for double posting but I guess there is no editiing in this tread. Um for question number 4 can we mail it to them and post it. And if we post it do we post it in this thread.

SwedBear
01-30-2008, 04:09 PM
No need to appologize. I might have turned off editing when I set the forum up.

The mail address is actually on our server so you either post it here in this thread or just mail it to us and we post it. Just realize that we cannot host huge pieces so if you are doing a video for example just put it on youtube.

Be creative :). We love creative on this site. I was almost on my way of making it a "make a Swedish pastry" contest in memory of my odd contests when I started the site (anyone remember them? .. Semla ... Swedish meatballs ...) but I decided just to do it this way.

Oh, and while the answers to the 3 questions are easy - anyone posting them here will be banned from the forum for a while and disqualified from this and future contests :).

/Björn

Ok so here is my answer to number 4

Well I think i would be a good owner for this card because well for one of course I would treat it properly. I have always used nvidia cards and have never actually used an ati card but now that ati has taken the lead I would like to have this card so I can finally know what it is like to have such a amazing product. I think ati/amd have out done them selves with this card and that anyone who owns this card should be proud to have it and they should show it off, I know I would. And you cant forget that you can do GPU folding with ati cards and I would do folding every day with this card.

This is why I think I should win the card. Gl to everyone

No it is not. For a prize like this I expect people could at least take 1 second to find the answers to the questions instead of just read them off a forum post.

ghidora: nope, its a card that will be send from AMD directly.
This BTW is not our regular monthly contest. It's a separate contest that AMD asked us if we wanted to run. It didn't feel right to say no just because we had another competition running :).

This new forum will be used to make it easier to follow our own competitions. Scott asked me to set it up so here it is. Apparently we are planning on running more competitions :).

4) I should win because I need a new graphics card for my new system which I am trying to build. I am finally going from AGP to a PCI-Express slot. I have been a loyal user of ATI cards as long as I have been building my own systems. I started with the 9700 PRO, to X800, to X1950 all on the same system. My system is really feeling its age now and the shift to a PCI-Express slot has now come due. Getting together the necessary funds for the new system is proving difficult as I am not a person of means. This has limited my choices as to what I can use for the new system components. Winning the 3870X2 would allow me to reallocate funds that I have set aside for the GPU towards better system components which I can then use for a few more years.

Great site hosting a great contest! Wow, I should be so lucky as to be able to participate and thank you Bjorn for allowing this to happen! Well I sent in my email for the required info and questions 1-3. Here is my thing for question 4. I have been creating and building a pc going on a couple years now. It has been pricey and waiting for certain tech to come out is to why it's taking so long. I originally wanted RD600 + R600 and I bought the only offering from DFI for RD600 but then the 2900XT cards were released and the combo wasn't looking so hot anymore, nor did I have the funds at the time. Now I'm looking at the X48 + HD3870X2 x 2. Atleast maybe I could win 1 from here to speed my project up. Here is my case as these pics were taken from last year (2007). I even had MNPCTECH say he likes my case. http://gallery.pcapex.com/showgallery.php/cat/500/ppuser/11810

Even though I haven't changed much on the case yet cuz of funds, it is dismantled a little right now as I need it this way for my new mobo. I can send in any current pics saying whatever if picture and story confirmation is needed. Thank you again for the opportunity.

4. Why should you win it?
Here, in Argentina, the hardware is really really expensive, I have to work for about three months without spending a cent on anything to be able to buy a great card like that! and this kind of hardware is really hard to get, you don't see one of this everyday, they are too expensive so there aren't to many people that can afford it, the local shops don't even sell them... that's why I think I deserve it. I'll take care of it, I won't overclock it, and I'll put a lot of fans so it won't be in danger be cause the heat :)

thanks!

Just submitted to the contest.. nothing like waiting until the last day :).

Question 4 answer:

I've never owned an ATI card in my life. I've lived with Nvidia since I started building my own PC's and I think its time I get the chance to check out and experience the power that AMD and ATI have put into this card. Its time for AMD and ATI to make a believer out of me. I've read the reviews, and I am impressed, but I would love to get first hand experience. I would even be willing to write up a synopsis for the website and provide pictures of play-by-play action and testing.

Ok, so I submitted my answer to #4 along with my email, but I will post it here as well. :)

4. Why should you win it?

Well, I like most every other gamer in this known world would love to
have this card and would gladly give it a loving home partnered up
with my 5000+ Black Edition, where it can live out its long days in
gaming goodness. Not only will I give it a loving workful, but
unknown to my 5 year old son, he will reap the benefits as well while
he is happily running from the police in Need For Speed: Most Wanted.
Also unknown to him is he is my future getaway driver and this is his
early training, so the more I can ratchet up the realism, the more
effective the training will be. With his successful training
completed (along with his drivers license) we will haul away enough
cash to retire and live like kings in a third world country.

Same, Submitted by Email but heres numbe 4

4) I really don't think there is a real reason I "should" win this. I am in need a graphics card pretty bad though. and would really like to see what ATI has to offer. I plan on buying a new big screen LCD this spring and really want to be able to game on it. I am also pretty impressed with the design of this card and ATI's decision to use two GPUs on one board and not go the route of the GX2. I hope this new line of cards can bring some glory back to true king of graphics! long live ATI!!!

Well why I think I should win this card? Personally do think I would be any more deserving than any other entrant. That it would be most appreciated there is no doubt, as I live on a fixed disability income and this card retails for approximately half my monthly stipend.

So am always a couple generations behind the latest and middlin' and sometime greatest as far as hardware goes. Have my sons up to socket 939 4400 on pcie and 4000 agp, this comp a barton 3200 FX5950 Ultra haha.

Would be nice to present the younger with a decent pcie gpu when he visits and gets his upgrades.
he gets the higher horsepower as he games a bit Oblivion is choking his current setup, and uses his rig as a home recording studio. The older uses his for a high capacity digital multimedia jukebox and mundane tasks so can do with less horsepower.

Winning this card would help me quite a bit, I got snagged on the Ultra X2 750w extreme for the younger's rig, emails special from an etailer I sometimes use for pc parts, and Bjorn3D's review the only available at the time it seemed like would be up to snuff, and Ultra had really seemed to of cleaned up their act the last few PSU releases.

Sadly via my Madshrimps newsfeed [H] Enthusiast who had the means to really put the X2 through its paces, well using this psu is a high risk venture, and further falsely advertised as SLI Ready Sporting the Nvidia SLI logo on the box. Not that would be running sli in the kid's rig, more so that psu's that pass the testing means in addition that they perform within spec, stable rails, no current, ripple etc issues and this X2 750w fails on many levels. [H] Enthusiast had 2 of 'em one died and the other just could perform as adverstised.

Further it comes to light the unit was never submitted to Nvidia, I contacted Ultra initial response was quick, assuring me the unit was SLI certified, met listed specs etc....but since informing them that it is not listed, that was never submitted for certification, met with a stoney silence thus far.

So that is a major setback and their visit in looming expect 'em at the end of the month, and suspect that things will not be resolved with Ultra before then.

So for me winning the card would be a major boon, can use the coin set aside for a much lessor gpu for the kid to get a decent psu and maybe a tad more ram for em on top of that. :)

Good luck everyone, and heed my tale of woe and steer clear of the Ultra X2 750w Extreme unless of course you happen to like large blocky shiney paperweights:jawdrop:

I think I should win this excellent video card for a few reasons. I would give "Ruby" a beautiful new home to live in, and always be respectful to her. I would keep her nice and cool. While at the same time keeping her busy and active with charity work, to keep her in shape. And of course I would let her run with stallions every once and a while to show her off, and give her the attention she deserves. In closing, I am building a new system from the bottom up, and Ruby is to be my princess.

Something to be said for names in the ol' hat method eh?

My chances would of probably been better that way, did not go the creative, flowery, rhetorical route:icon_tiphat:

Spent all that juice lashing Ultra in a polite yet angry manner for ripping myself and others off on that X2 750w extreme, and after they said oh but is sli ready (certified) in the initial response, have given me the silent treatment once pointed out that : As per Bryan Del Rizzo at NVIDIA - The Ultra X2 Extreme Edition 750w Power Supply that you reviewed has not been submitted for SLI Certification. Therefore, it is not a certified SLI-Ready power supply and is not listed on SLIZone.

And further Nvidia has demanded/asked Ultra to remove the SLI Ready Logo from the packaging and feature list.

I have managed to get ne etailer/brick motor firm I have done business with in the past to discontinue the wretched thing, a small victory I s'pose but still out the coin so far, anyone know the phone number to Ultra's Corporate offices...the tech support guys are snubbing me :help:

02-17-2008, 11:27 PM
Ok, guys. Sorry that it took a while. Had >100 entries and of course had to read them all and ponder who deserved the card.

There were actually 1 person who had not managed to answer the first three questions right :). The rest nailed those answers.

Before I name the winner (he already knows it as I contacted him before announcing it to make sure the info is correct) a few observations I made.

1/ Crysis is a ***** :). At least half if not more used Crysis as a reason for needing a new card. I wonder how many more cards are being sold due to the game.

2/ A lot of you guys sit with really old cards. I have a suggestions. Those of you who have decent cards lying around not being used (or sitting in a server where they not are doing any good), use our sale/buy forum and offer them to the less fortunate members. Let's try to spread the GPU love a bit.

3/ Only one video were made and only one person included some images. I'm a bit dissapointed there :). It's a great card and you could have put a bit more effort convincing me.

4/ Bjorn3d really is a site that reaches the whole wide world. I had entries from South Africa, India, Israel, Romania, China, Taiwan etc. etc. I love it!

There were a lot of good answers on Q4. Some were frank and just said they wanted it, others had crappy systems and wanted to upgrade, a few said they would help the world by folding for Bjorn3D if they won :).

In the end I had about 10 that I rated a bit above the others and had to narrow it down to one. I wish I had tons of more cards to give out.

The winner of the competition is Yggdrasil. I actually was a bit hesitant about picking a Swede as winner but in the end I felt it shouldn't be any different than picking a American or Canadian. Yggdrasil convinced me by not only telling the story when his and his 4 year old sons computer broke but also including images including one where his son held a sign saying: "Bjorn3D. I want to play COD4". And who am I to deny the boy that awesome game? We need to make sure the future generation grows up with the best hardware possible :). I also can relate to the situation with limited funds due to children, morgage on a house and a wife that loves shopping. Our first child is due in August and I am already realizing I have to spend less on computers in the future.

Again, there were many of you I would love to send a card. I think a lot of you deserve to have better cards in your system so keep participating in these competitions and hopefully you will win in the future.

/Björn

It really depends on your budget, but if you're talking on a Quad Q6600, I would definitely prefer the E8400 over it...;-) But if you can afford the Faster Quad-Cores, go for a Quad already...:icon_tiphat:

Quad is very tempting but I dont know if its worth the extra money.

Which PSU should I go for? Ive got an Zalman zm500-hp that I got of warranties when the old computer died. Will this be enough? If not, would it be enough to buy an VGA PSU?

Yes actually. Your Avatar is advertising for them. The OCZ GameXStream series are great because they are good and solid, cheap and at the same time space saving and are not bulky. Only thing though is that it does not have an 8pin PCI-e plug for your card to overclock it. But if your happy with it's stock performance then there is no problem by plugging in the two 6 pin PCI-e plugs into it.

borschtBomber[SS]
02-18-2008, 01:46 PM
I don't think he needs a monster PSU for it..it actually draws less than my HD 2900 XT (which is a power hog) at idle and about roughly 30 watts more at load ; and I have run it on an Ultra X3 600W without any issues. Since he has a much more efficient system than mine he is probably just fine with that power supply.

I would then wait for the E8400 to become available. Come on, you should be patient when you're building a new system... ;-)

Now seriously, it is up to you if you can afford the Q9300. If you have the extra bucks, I would go with the Q9300, but if not, I guess you'll be more than fine with the E8400.

I'm afraid that the Zalman 500W just WON'T be enough for your "strong" system. :frown:

I would advise having AT LEAST a 650W PSU with more than 80A in total (a single rail) or AT LEAST four 12V rails of AT LEAST 20A each. :-?

A good PSU can be OCZ, PC Power & Cooling, Corsair, Mushkin or any other well-known brand, which makes good Power Supplies. ;-)

I guess you can open a separate thread asking for a recommendation on a new PSU and Bjorn3D members will be happy to help you out...:icon_tiphat:

Ok, found the AMD recommendations here (http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonhd3800/requirements.html) and looks like they recommend a 550w for single card and 750w for crossfire. So while I still think you would be ok with that 500W as far as power, does it have 2 6-pin PCI-e connections? That may be the deal breaker ;)

It's great that you're giving this video card a fine new home Yggdrasill, which inevitably makes us all feel better since we know it's going to good use to someone who will really use it to it's full potential. Anyway, enjoy the new card and the extra power it should give you. I would offer to send you some extra cooling equipment, which isn't likely to be used on my next build but the cost of shipping from the United States to Sweden would probably cancel out any good it would do. Hope that CPU gets in stock as quickly as possible, since it's always a pain to wait for those sort of things.

8-pin connector is only required when overclocking it.

Did it come in a big black suitcase-like case?

There's no need to buy a PSU which converts molex or 6 pin to 8 pin PCI-E connector. That's why i've said that, he should get a PSU with 8 pin (native/direct,that is) PCI-E connector.Leave it,you aren't trying to understand. So, back to topic again.Pics please . :)
