85 degrees shouldn't be too hot. My 8800GTS gets that temps and there's no problems here. I think you should be worried when you go well over 90 degrees. I don't think your Rainbow crashes are related to your temperature.
Try running ATItool and scan for artifacts, to see if it gets to hot. ATITool demands more from your card than Crysis.

Make sure you have an ample amount of airflow as 85°C is getting hot.

If 78(c) is the temp on full load, then thats fine.
If 78(c) is the temp on idle, then thats bad.

I'm running stock on my XFX 8800 Gt Alpha Dog, 625/900 and with a $5 slot cooler fan on each side it idles at 42C loads out at 66C. Water cooling it this or next month then doing the bios volt mod so I can drive it harder than 699/980. Which do you think brings a bigger gain, more core speed/lower memory speed or adjust both about the same?
Maybe the 600/900 ratio is the key, if you move up 100 on the core move up 66 on the memory to maintain the ratio?
