Have a couple problems but will start with this. Ran OCCT last night and my idle temps were 35, 35, 36, 36. After 10 mins they had risen ( should have checked earlier) to 75, 79, 84, 85. I immediately turned off. I have an Thermaltake silent 775D heatsink. I'm thinking about lapping and using Artic 5 this weekend. Any other ideas?

Sounds like either too much thermal compound or improperly mounted heatsink. My V1 had a bent pin that I didn't notice. When it was installed it felt tight, but it wasn't seated properly so I got pretty much those same temps.

Lapping should be your last resort not your first since it can leave you with worse results.

Double check your thermal paste and make sure you getting good contact.

Use a couple of different programs to monitor the temps of the chip since it may vary from app to app.

Try using a different cooler if you have one available. The one you have really isn't designed to deal with the heat load of a quad-core.

What would you recommend for a cooler?

Well, with the ThermalTake V1, I'm able to run 3.2ghz on the processor safely, all the time.

The V1 is a good choice.
The Noctua NH-U12P comes with an ultra quiet fan and cools a lot.

The V1 is nearly silent as well. And it has an adjustable fan. Sadly though, you have to open the case to adjust it, unless you have a fan controller.

Spent last night pulling computer apart. Lapped both heatsing and cpu. Used Artic 5. Idle is 36,37,36,36. Ran OCCT for 30 mins now and temps are at 52, 52, 51, 52. This is with the side cover off. Looks alot better:)

What sort of case are you using?? What sort of fans does it have??
From what i see your case doesn't have good enough airflow.

I have a ultra aluminus. 120 fans..1 in front pulling air in and 1 in back exhausting out. Thinking about putting an 80 in front of the air duct to the heatsink/fan. you don't think these temps are good or just think I should get them better?

If you've lapped and AS5'd the stuff I would still think you would have a lower idle temp.
Are you Oced or at stock? I dont know maybe its just the cooler isn't as good as it could be.

Is this a G0 or B3 stepping processor? If it's B3 those are good temps if G0 then they could be better but still not too bad.

Its a go, not overclocked. I did lower cpu voltage down to 1.20 but doesn't seem to lower temp. Should I lower voltage more?

You can always try as Intel lists the min. voltage as 0.85 on their spec sheet, but I would think that anything lower than 1.20 you'd start to run into stability issues. Shouldn't hurt it though. Keep in mind if you take the voltage too low and you can't get it to BOOT you'll have to reset the BIOS, make sure you remember that.

Did a couple more tests and added a fan on the air duct to the cpu fan. Ran ATITool for 10 mins, was 47 at idle and and 67 after 10 mins. Ran Everest for an hour. idle=33 and 46 after the hour. Getting better. CPU core volt was at 1.14

mannnnn there is still somthing wrong.. I have the V1 un-lapped q6600 and my cores sit around 26-30 when the computer has been on all day...

Heh:grin: I have the artic 7 freezer pro, and it runs at 22C after a hard days work.
It runs at -12C when I first start it. (Yes that is a minus.)

I'd recommend it. It has adjustable fan speed via software.

Mm-hmm... perhaps if you store your computer inside a freezer. :ahhhhh: Air coolers aren't going to cool below ambient.

I've tried an Arctic Freezer 7 Pro and have been less than impressed. He would get about the same temps he already has with his current cooler.

Heh, my house is pretty fricken cold. Ambient temperature here is prolly 10-14C.

Swiftech Mcp350, Swifty Apogee Wb, Micro res, and a triple radiator with 3 43cfm fans going to be enough to tame the Q6600?

-12 is impossible inside a house on air cooler....
unless its -25 in your house.
make use of logic, how can a heating processor being cooled by a heatsink that is in contact with ambiant air be cooler than the air around it... ?
you could point 50 high cfm fans at your heatsink and the BEST is will do is ambiant temps. I am sure a heck not skilled at physics, but this is pretty straightforward to understand.

Also, that artic cooler is well known, so are its performances, its a pretty average cooler.
You just dont have -12, I'm sorry to tell you, maybe its reading wrong or you use a buggy soft.....

yes, depends on how extreme you want to go, but you will get a comfortable and silent setup going with this.

I'm running an MCP655, D-Tek Fuzion with the quad nozzle and a double rad with 2 73 CFM fans. It does the job ok. I'm not real happy with my current temps so I'm gonna pick up a triple rad and another fan when I get back home though, I really wouldn't recommend anything smaller. My Q6600 seems to take more voltage than most, couldn't get it to run 3.5 on anything less than 1.52v after vdroop, about 1.56 before. So I'm running at about 61 degrees. I figure with a triple rad, I could lose another 5-7, and I might just go ahead and lap the processor and block, see if I can knock another 5 or so off of that.

I lapped my Q6600 and lost 4-5 deg celsius (core temp).
