Hey Guys,
I think I will be buying a XFX Geforce 8800 GTS Alpha Dog Edition video card, and my question is, if I change the cooler on the card, will I still have waranty for it. I know they say it is modder friendly warranty, but does this mean that I can change the cooler? I understand that if you overclock and something goes wrong that they will replace it, but will they if you use a different cooler? Thanks guys for the help.

From what I have seen from the XFX techs on here, you will still be covered as long as you're in the US. BUT if you RMA the card, it has to have the original cooler back on it, so hang on to it, along with all the mounting hardware.

In North America you can do anything to the card but touch the PCB.

haha, I know what you mean Miker, it just sounds funny how you wrote it. Thanks guys for the help. It sounds like if I touch the PCB (basically the card ... lol) I will ruin the warranty. haha

XD. Don't go trying to put on solidstate caps on it. #1 thing is keep everything from old HS, they are picky about that.

It looks like XFX has the best warranty out there. :) I love XFX. I am buying a card. Hopefully today. :) My dad is a bit angry today, but hopefully I can get him to buy me the card. I have the money for it, it's just he has to pay from his credit card.

Yea i encourage anybody buying a video card to get XFX. You just cant beat the deal for a GTS for 299.

And not just that, you get the warranty. XFXs prices might be a little higher then some off brands, but the support you get is great.

I think the $299 8800GTS from XFX is the cheapest on Newegg right now.

Yeah, I think I will order it today since it is 299 and also you get a 20 dollar rebate. :) I will also buy two Hitachi 500GB hard drives for RAID configuration. The seagate 7900.11 looks good but it seems to be slower than other hard drives.

Seagate has quality though.

Yeah, I heard, although I never had any good luck with them. Two hard drives died already withing 1 year and they never let me do warranty even when it had a 5 year old warranty. I have a Hitachi 160GB hard drive right now that my syster is using at the moment and I had that hard drive for about 2 and a half year, and there is no problem with that at all. I like Hitachi hard drives. They also perform better. Never had any problems with them before. Well but this is only my opinion, since everybody has their own opinion. :icon_tiphat:

I have a working 10 year old(ish) seagate in my dad's PC. I don't really trust Tandon or Western Digital any more with HDs. Tandon 30MB only lasted 20 years :-/ and one of my Western Digital 74G lasted 4 years.

I have a Maxtor 120mb that still works and a Seagate 10mb. If i chunked that Seagate at your head youd be dead, or in critical condition. Its freakin huge.

I bet I will be. I am very happy. This is my first actuall video card that I actually bought. Well I bought a Geforce FX 5600 long time ago, and then I won a X850 on a designing contest, and then I had the 7900GT in SLI that I won just a little over a year ago, and now the 8800GTS. Yay! :)

You'll be liking it, set up right you can push 13000-14000 in 3dmarks2006, throw a water block and some ram and mosfet heat sinks on that puppy an you'll need a lion tamers whip to keep it under control. :jawdrop:

Yeah, I am planning to get a score around there, although I am not sure if I will be able to do it right away with my dual-core. Once I get the Quad-Core, I bet I will get close to that number. I won't know till I try. Is it possible to have 14000 in 3DMark06 with only one card and no extreme overclocking? I don't want to overclock my video card too much, only when I get a good cooler like the Thermalright HR-05 or whatever it is called.

I got 13265 on a Q6600 with one 8800GT (the evga superclocked edition) and the CPU was overclocked to 3.4

The only thing using up the quad cores right now is 3dmark06. Nothing else uses them really. I was gonna get a Phenom but figured whats the point? Im just gonna get me a fast dual core.

No single thing uses quad cores right now. But being able to run several things in there own threads, with a dedicated core is really nice.

Cause im really gonna go through every time i start my computer and sort my processes list with "set affinity". Ahahaha. Only thing a quad core is good for right now is Folding and 3dmark.
BTW money order is in the mail.

No no no, you don't have to do that. Seems to me that everything I start will take the next available core. If it needs more than one, it'll take it. If something else gets fired up, it'll divide the work accordingly. It seems to do a pretty good job. Folding is awesome, I run 3 cores and have the 4th open. Anything else I run just runs on that core. I have actually run CoD4 at the same time and it only took one empty core and one from the F@H and left the other two folding just fine.

Well your running Vista so it might do that accordingly. Until i get my new system built im sticking with XP 32bit. But even with Vista and a dual core i have seen where it just checks everything to both cores. Even F@H. So it like never goes over 50% cpu at all. Whch is a shame.

There's some nifty programs you can get that auto set affinity when a program starts up, PP. You should be able to hit around that mark peti, maybe just a little less.

Lol run another process to change affinity of another process.....no thanx.

Lol, I hear ya there. I was hoping to find a way to tweak the Vista registry to change the boot screen for instance. Turns out you can't. But there are a few programs out there that say they can, but I don't trust them enough to download them. I hate having extra crap to do something that I could do myself.
