Hello all,
I have a querie, I have just installed the 7950GT AGP into my PC, Installed the latest drivers 169.21, have a new PSU Antec 500w triple rail 17a per, 1 Large fan case, running P4 HT 3Ghz, 2Gb Ram, 160Gb HDD.
No the Card is on its own line, and using the Temp gauge it runs at 53C (idle) & gets to 70c during play.
OK, That said and done heres the conundrum.... Why is it that when I load a Heavy game (COD4/MOH Airbourne...) does it crash/freeze the system BUT Then when I do a restart (Immediately) and load the game again it will play it no problems at all (Even for hours, Long time for me getting on you know).
Also after the restart I can change games with no problems either.
Whats your thoughts ??

It's the drivers. The new one's I tried too and it screwed up my games. The best one I use is 163.71 drivers. If you do a google search you will find the file somewhere.

Yeah that situation does sound more driver related. Keep us posted if the other drivers help.

I run 169.21, it was the best so far. I would have to guess not enough power to the card.

Well the driver was screwing up my games and look at my PSU. My character in Hellgate London was invisible except for a few things and the mapping was not rendering correctly. I switched back the drivers and voila...problem gone. Maybe it is just not affecting the games you play Miker.

163.XX beta was all messed up in COD4, 169.21 fixed it. Plus 169.21 works perfect in Farcry.

ah well I was not talking about the 163.71 beta. I was talking the certified one's. I don't play COD4 so that may be the reason I never saw a problem with this driver. But as soon as I installed the 169.21 driver everything went crazy when playing games and sometimes it would reboot when trying to boot. I guess the second time around was better..lol:lol:

Hey what I'll do is try the 163.71, and a few others and let you know.
On the case of Power, If that were the case would it not happen ALL the time ? This freeze/crash ONLY happens the first time I start any game & as I said after the restart it runs perfectly. But thanks for the input. :)
Another thought though, These games were originally installed when my 6600GT was installed, Could changing the card leave some info in the games programme that is causing conflict. I Wonder ?? ;-)
Thanks to all who answered so far.

Did you uninstall the old driver before putting in the new card?

 Hi, I did, BUT did not use a sweeper so I wonder.
Have not had time this weekend to try another driver, But had noticed something...
We had a connection problem with AOL, and had to restart the PC (Had Not played any games at this point), But after restart my son went online and played COD4 with no problems, So I suspect its a driver problem.
And another...
There is one more thing i noticed though, Initially when starting a game for the first time my GPU Temp is only 43-46, But after a restart its 53+ Could this be a problem ??:!:
any more thoughts

I can confirm that my XFX 7950 GT AGP did not like the 169.21 drivers, I had lots of graphical errors where I couldn't read the menus in games and from time to time there would be a flicker on the screen.
I have reverted back to 163.75 drivers and since then have had no problems.
169.21 were causing my graphics card to look faulty, I was getting worried.

Hi, Thank Jellybelly, I am begining to think that as well, But just to clear it all up I started my tests at the weekend (Been sick upto then), SO...
Started my PC, Checked GPU Temp 41C, waited 10 mins doing nothing...
Temp now 47C, Went on the internet for 15mins, Temp now 51C.
Started Medal of Honour Airbourne... Crashed AT Menu.
Restart.... Temp 52C, Started MOHA Played game for 20mins NO Problems.
Then swaped to another game (Sudden Strike 3) Played for 20 mins NO Problems, Temp Now 56C.
SO Uninstalled 169.21 driver, Cleaned out drivers using Driver Cleaner Pro & Reinstalled 169.21 ready for Sunday Morning start up.
As before Crashed again at MOHA Menu, Then when restarted Played No Problems.
My next test will be to reverse the driver to 163.75, Let you know:)

51c is nothing. GPUs are hot.

I get 48C-55C on this GPU, never seems to affect my experience in any way. Put a slot fan right next to it if you are worried, this dropped my temps by 3-4C.
I also have read on here that overclocking the 7950GT is immpossible, but my milage has really varied on that. I can clock it to 630/715...seems to run about the same as 550/650. Although, with all the bells and whistles arleady cranked on BF2142, what are you going to achieve, an extra pixel or two? LOL, I am running 1024x768 on a 17" flatscreen.

I just hate when you upgrade drivers for the better when in reality is for the worse.

Happens all the time. That's why I save drivers that work on a disc and file it away just in case for later. I cannot count how many times I would try updated drivers to just revert back again. Sometimes when trying to fix drivers for the new cards the older one's get well....da boot in da balls!

Problem is when your PC is really screwy and you have to format.

OH Well, Yesterday Uninstalled the 169.21, Cleaned & Installed 163.75
Guess What....
Same Problem, I think I revert back to the 169.21 and think of something else, I can't see it being the PSU as if it was that it would happen every time I start a game (This problem goes away with a restart), Also not the driver/s ? so all I can think of is it is perhaps my system (But had no problems with my 6600GT) OR a fault with the GPU card itself.
But I have noticed though that the PC is still running (Not Frozen) so I susspect its the GPU in either a compatiblity issue OR a fault.
So at the moment I going to live with it, Until I finished my Project, Then completely reinstall the system (Loads of rubbish on it anyway) and see what that does... If that don't work I might Shout at it to see if I can scare it enough to start working properly...

Hello again, OK so far no difference to my last post, but reading some of the other problems people are having, would like to try down clocking by a bit...
Just to se if that works... ONLY problem have never done this before ?
Whats the best reduction drops to start with and do I do both clock & mem or what ?
Any suggestions, Oh and can it be reverted to factory settings by a default setting Or would I have to adjust it back again.
Thanks :icon_tiphat:

I use Powerstrip to set the "performance defaults". This removes my slight overclock and sets back to 550/650 which is the default.
I suppose you could also use Ntune...but I find Powerstrip easier.
