Im about ready to upgrade and come to find out there are no penryns anywhere...no dual or quad core to be found except the xtreme which is way to expensive for me.
So far I decided on a gigabyte ds3r with raid for about $125 and ocz, patriot or geil 2x2gb for about $95 after rebate on the egg.
Is there currently a problem with the penryn availability that I was unaware of? I dont want to buy one at a huge premium either...

After the penyrns (wolfdales) aren't they slated to lay out the nephalm at the end of the year? Those are supposed to be an evolution of the Intel chips, penyrns are shrunken previous generation chips that went from 65nm to 45nm. Nephalm (probably spelled it wrong) is slated to have the memory controller on die, and true quad design. I also understand that penyrn is the first generation of Intel CPU totally lead free, lead being the best metal to prevent whisker growth. Tin it's common replacement is a metal crystal and grows whiskers at different rates given it's environment. Be interesting to see how it affects the longevity of the chips. (If they are using tin not sure on that)
If they do it right and maintain their over clockability, the combination of on die memory controller, true Quad design and 45nm design should be a thing of wonder. (Unless they pull a Phenom)

I saw that but its out of stock like on most webstores...thats what I keep saying, where are they? Plus the list is $186, or $53 less which is over a 25% markup over list!

Look up tankguys (http://www.tankguys.com/)
You can pre-order the Quads (Yorkfields) and they might the the dual cores (Wolfdales) in stock.
There really isn't much of a point to go 45nm quad right now, the multi's are so low that you might as well get a 65nm Q6600 or Q6700.

Wow, you got raped. The E8400 is a pretty beasty CPU, it's what I'm using in my next build. Cheapest GOOD processor you can get in AU as well.

I remember when the high-end was certainly a few hundred bucks above 200USD. Let's just hope the price war between Intel and DAMMIT goes on for a good long time.
