Hot CPU.

OK, first in CS:S my CPU got to 68c so my PC rebooted, that is over the max temp. Then I turn it off and leave. I come back, windows doesn't boot, I restart and get the safemode menu, and boot normal, now here I am. I look at temp, 1 minute after boot I am at 56c. Cooled down to 46c after 5 minutes? I am guessing I should just de-dust my pc.

Well the extreme editions do run quite hot, you could take the heatsink off, clean it and the CPU and then reseat the heatsink with new TIM.

That would probably be your best bet at decreasing your temps a bit...although my EE is sitting between 50-60*C but I'm just using the stock C2D cooler that came with my E6400...soon to be replaced by TRU120 once I've installed my new TRU120 eXtreme in my computer.

Max temp is 67... It used to idle 10 cooler, I am just going to take it part and see if the CPU fan is still good. I put AS5 on like 2 months ago, so it is good.

What speed are you running the CPU fan on?

Miker
02-18-2008, 10:06 PM
2640RPM on the fan.

alfhenrik
02-18-2008, 10:27 PM
Hmm...weird, I run my fan at ~1700RPM and as I mentioned above, it sits between 50-60*C...might be time to clean it out

Miker, are you using a stock cooler? If yes, remount it.Also,do not set the voltage to Auto in Bios,be sure to use the lowest voltage possible at the speed you want the CPU to run

Look at my SIG, I am running a Zalman 92mm, no OC.

Dusty, Please for the long jevity of your computer please do it a favor and vacume your computer out ever month. She likes it and will keep your parts lasting longer. Also a 92 mm fan for your heatsink is kinda bad... Id suggest 120mm fan.

Miker

92mm is great for a Socket 478. My guess is it is just dusted up, I am about to clean it out.

Um, I think I have like 400posts this month so far lol. I am pretty sure I am in.

Not like I have the money to get a CPU/GPU/RAM though... :-/

I upgraded from a 2.8GHz hyper and a 6800 - 128m to a 3.4GHz EE and a 7950GT 512m. My PC is like 2x faster, <2k PCmark to 5.1k.

You wanna buy my E6400 and X1950 Pro? 8-)

Nah, don't think so...the C2D's are quicker than the old 478 pin CPUs (even if they're Extreme) and the X1950Pro PCIe I'm pretty sure beats the old 7950GT...I have no solid proof what-so-ever but it's just what I've noticed when using them...

Miker

A 3.4GHz single core beats a low clocked C2D, and 1950pro and 7950GT are about the same in performance.

Fair enough, but how about a E6400 at 3.2Ghz

Uhm, no.

The GPU will be a bit slower, but atleast its reliable and wont die if u clock it 1mhz :)

and the CPU will blow urs away, even underclocked to half its speed :D

Hey, my 7950GT has been running for like 3 months at stock speeds. XFX gave me the reward at 1 month for making the 7950GT AGP run longer then anyone else.

I must say that it is a while since I had a system with that much dust in it...I have since bought cases that have nice little airfilters on all intakes...and if they don't have filters I tape them up...

"Free flowing" is why my 7950 is still with us.

 wow Miker, that is quite the collection of dust you got there. It would be a wise to invest in some dust filters.

EDIT: no wonder why you have so much dust in your computer.

I am guessing you never clean it?

CPU cooler never been cleaned for 2-3 months, rest of PC 4-5 years.

The washable air filters do their job pretty good.I still suggest a remount of the CPU cooler, but be sure to clean it good before you remount it.
I have a P4 3.0Ghz@3.52Ghz Northwood P4 Sock 478 myself and I can say that I get max temps of 48 degrees C under load with stock cooling and 38 degrees C idle. The voltage is increased to 1.6V in Bios(1.6V to 1.648V) reported in CPU-Z.
I know the EE heats a little more, but you have a better cooler than me and you have not even overclocked the CPU,or increased the voltage.

Me too, I just wash them once a month or so...keeps my case relatively clean...haven't cleaned the case out since I got it a year or so ago and there's only a little bit of dust inside...

That's true...on my previous case I replaced the side with a RyanX Mesh panel and it got kind of messy...although it seemed most of the dust stuck to the actual mesh panel, so I just used a vacuum cleaner to clean it off...

I have worked as a PC tech (this is now more my hobby to support new equipment) for over 15 years. I cannot tell you how many times that I have seen machines fry themselves by having dust collect in the machine. It gets worse when either the user has pets or smokes. I have also seen problems with machines where there is a fireplace/wood burner in the house.

I suggest putting some type of filtering over the air intakes of your computer once you clean it out. After all, the automotive industry has been doing it for years.

While also working as a computer tech building computers for customers, one customer brought in their computer and it had stopped working...when we opened the case we found the skeleton of a mouse that had somehow gotten into the case and started chewing on the power cables...

I pulled a nest of live baby mice out of a computer at an assisted living complex a while back, the seniors adopted and raised the mice. I did how ever eradicate the some what talcum power smelling dust bunnies.
