ZDNet has done some testing, in a two part report, to see if they could find which is the more responsive OS, XP SP2 or Vista SP1...

Part 1 -
Vista SP1 vs. XP SP2 (http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=1332)

Part 2 -
Vista SP1 vs. XP SP2 - Part Deux (http://blogs.zdnet.com/hardware/?p=1338)

On top of that is the further complication that the file transfer progress bars are coded to work differently. Vista’s file copy dialog box goes away when the cache is committed, while under XP the copy dialog goes away while the committal is still pending. In other words XP is coded to appear fast.

Anybody who dosent want to read all that jibber jabber and try to understand it (I did) it basicly means XP SP2 is faster in general and Vista is doing what it is supposed to do. While having demanding tasks going on you can still use your PC instead of walking away. It will just make it that much slower but is still responsive.

I guess that if you are running a high performance pc,the performance gap between the XP SP2 and Vista SP1 does not matter any more

Vista is 10% slower, that simple.

But Vista is soo much prettier  (not the reason I'm running it, although if it deactivates one more time , I'm going back to good ol' XP)

I dont use an OS for its prettyness i use an OS for its ability to do what i want and fast.

Yep, and you can make XP look just as good as vista.

Yea I have no issues using XP, just wanted to give Vista a go and it hasn't been too bad, just a couple of annoyances but then again I remember when they first released XP...same spiel all over again.

I actually like Vista. Yes it is a little slower in some things but after using it for a year I do not notice it. The nicest thing is app recovery, instead of something quit responding which 9 out of 10 times means reboot in XP, Vista will restart the app and things are good.

Oh well that is my thoughts on the matter and I do think this will be the year we start seeing DX10 stuff make a difference.

SP1 has improved my experience with Vista, before SP1 it would take forever to copy a movie from my Vista box to my MCE box...now it takes about the same time as from my XP box...

With my new build I am thinking of using Vista 64 bit Ultimate. We shall see. It seems Vista has been working out many of the bugs that has kept me away from it. The biggest reason why I may switch over is for the 64 bit performance in a few areas not mention RAM recognition etc. I just want to get the most out of my PC for all the money I put in it.

I am still waiting to make the change. I want to update my system before I move to Vista. I am also not happy with the way MS decided to bring out so many versions of the software and made the cost unbearable in some cases.

I guess for the time being, I will continue to run XP Pro and Ubuntu 7.

Thats the smart thing to do. Honestly i can only see the reason of going 4gig to get Vista.

Which is the main reason for me going to Vista...I have used XP 64-bit...didn't seem to work very well...really buggy etc...Vista 64-bit not as buggy...still a little bit but most of the bugs have gone away after installing SP1
