This may sound stupid, but can I take my rig apart and travel with my pieces ?
Say I go to mexico or whatever, I can take my cpu, hard drive, mobo, ram and setup shop somewhere else, find a psu and case in local shop.
Just wondering what are the policies on transport.
Ideally, I would pack them all well and bring it with me to my seat. Its small enough...

My dad used to travel with computer parts. There is no problem unless you are on an airplane.

In my case, i would keep all the invoices ready with me if i have to travel somewhere with some PC parts so that if needed, i can produce them to prove that, these parts belong to me.I've heard one people (with PC hardwares) got caught by the airport customs because he couldn't prove that those belong to him.Just my 2 cents. ;)

You would probably be better off not storing them in your carry on, since they would arguably look more suspicious then if they were packed up tight in your suitcase. Of course that is not ideal since things tend to be banged around a bit while in a suitcase, but they should be fine with enough padding. Anyway if you bring them with you on a plane some foolish flight attendant might mistake it for bomb parts and give you trouble.

The best thing you could do is to call the airline and ask what they want to you to do with them. That way you have an authority backing you up and know for sure what you have to do with them.

Well, I would just pack it well and put it in your luggage. You know how airplanes are now. Do you really want to have 15 guys looking in your suitcase, dropping your CPU on the ground yelling at you?

Our son works for SouthWest airlines, carry on probably isn't an option, if you carry it on they want to see it working. Gotta turn on laptops, high end large cell phones, blackberries etc. An your battery being dead isn't an excuse, they'll make you mail it home.

They wouldn't even let me carry my computer repair kit, I might disassemble the plane in mid flight :jawdrop: Fortunately the pilot knew our son and took the kit into the cockpit and gave it back after the flight.

I don't travel with a computer. If I desperately need one just lease one or find a internet cafe somewhere. I would not bring my parts into an airline ever. When I travel I just a lot of memory cards because all I do is take videos and pics.
