hi
ok i got 680 board and bought ultra extreme
fitted and working great for a week
didnt post this morning so after reading forums i pulled heatsink off and it booted
put 120 extreme back on and nothing
had made it so it cleared the resistor block at back of board
put stock heatsink back on and works
at factory settings now
what id like to know is what is the problem and are there any fixes
the exteme 120 works real well and ive noticed this problem with aftermarket heatsinks

soooo
what is the fix??
is there something i can put inbetween
i think its the pressure from backplate that streeses the board
hope you can help
cheers

I've got the same heat sink, Ultra 120 Extreme. Check and make sure all the screws that go through the mother board to the stand offs are tight, and every one that can be used is used. It helps keep the board from flexing.

Then in bios usually you can lower the fan warning, the 120mm usually run slower than stock heat sinks. If it goes below the fan RPM warning it'll either beep at you or shut down.

Some people with that trouble use a cable tie or two, or wire the heat sink so it's supported partially by the cable. If it's a board warp problem you should be able to reseat the heat sink with it laying flat and if it runs that way it's probably warp related.

thanks i will try
maybe it was the cpu fan thing
although it ran for over a week ok
i did have the fan direct to molex tho for full speed so maybe it was because there wasnt a fan plugged into the mother board
all the screws were good and i had made a bracket to take the weight of the heatsink
so reseat it and plug the fan into the board again?
what settings should i set the fan too?
or would it be easier to get a higher rpm fan?
cheers tho and will try it and report back
