I just found out that I won!!! Thanks!!!

I was out all day yesterday and when I got home I just vegetated on the couch. ;-)

I was checking the specs on XFX's site, and have one question (I think I know the answer, but I want confirmation): The memory supported lists DDR2 533, 667 and 800. Can I assume that these are the single rate speed and that the "effective" rate is 1066, 1333 and 1600? It doesn't make sense that they would list the "effective" rate so low or the MB would be requiring some really old/slow memory by today's standards.

Well, I'm off to build a list of new parts (CPU, mem, case, PSU and HDD) to make this thing work. I don't want to cannibalize my existing PC, in case I run into trouble. ;-)

Thanks again!!!

Congrats again & i think the official supported speed is DDR2-800 & anything using of higher than that rated speed, will be Overclocking.Maybe a more knowledgable person than me, can ask your questions, if i'm wrong.

No, the effective rates that are officially support are DDR2-533, DDR2-667, and DDR2-800.

No, the effective rates that are officially support are DDR2-533, DDR2-667, and DDR2-800.

Are you serious??? That seems low, considering all of the 780i boards listed on New Egg say the effective rate is 1066 which is 533x2. What you are telling my is that the board only supports DDR2 PC2 4200 (266x2 or 533MHz), PC2 5300 (333x2 or 667MHz) and PC2 6400 (400x2 or 800MHz). Those are old RAMs and it seems very odd that a new board would not support PC2 8500 which is DDR2 1066. That just doesn't seem right.

werty316
03-02-2008, 09:33 PM
It does support PC2-8500 which is DDR2-1066, you either have to overclock to reach those speeds or run the memory independently using an unlink FSB:memory ratio.

Reason why PC2-8500 which is DDR2-1066 are officially supported is because DDR2 JEDEC specs go upto PC2-6400.

werty316
03-02-2008, 09:35 PM
Oops, last line wasn't complete.

The reason why memory faster than PC2-6400 (DDR2-800) isn't officially supported is because DDR2 JEDEC specs go upto PC2-6400.

ghidora
03-02-2008, 09:54 PM
DOH! I'm not into OCing, so hopefully it supports an independent memory clock.

I guess it's time to post a question in the XFX tech support area. ;-)

Got the MB today! Didn't pull it out of the bubble wrap yet, but it was packaged up pretty well. Now I have to decide when I can afford to drop some cache on parts to build around it, or, do I want to be nice and give it to my brother whose existing PC is about 5 years old and outdated by 6. ;)

Decisions, decisions, decisions...

I bet you meant cash

Anyway, if you don't have the money to "spend" now, just give it to your bro...

On the other end, isn't he too young for such a mobo??? ;-)

LOL...yeah, I meant cash. I just got home from a nice hard day of coding where today I demoed some new security measures that cache information in encrypted form. ;)

As for being too young, he's 33. ;) I, on the other hand, will be 37 the 26th of this month.

Still undecided though. I just dropped $2500 on a pair of laptops for the family on the 25th of last month (6 days before finding out that I one the MB. If I could have waited just a bit longer I would have bought the parts for the gaming rig instead.

If I hand the board off to my bro, I won't be taking pics until he is ready to gather up some parts. And if I decide to do a build, I will probably hold off until I am ready to assemble before taking a few. So, it could be a while. ;)

Dammit, why couldn't the feds send out that $1800 refund now instead of waiting until May?!?!?! It would go straight to the parts and my brother would be on his own.:devildance: LOL

Oops ...I've just noticed now that HIS PC is 5 years old... I don't know how come I undestood that your brother IS 5 years old... So now you can understand why I thought of him being too young to get such a board...;-)

I didn't even think that was you line of thought. I just thought that you assumed he was younger than me and therefore too young for what "big brother" just won. ;)

In any event, I spoke with him about it today and he doesn't have the money to spend either...LOL So, I told him it will stay here and the first one to get enough to do the build gets the board.:thumleft:
