That is sad, someone that created so much.
PS. I don't like D&D but I know how much of his life he had to put into it.

I know Gygax has had a big influence in my life, and probably a lot of yours. I first role-played probably close to 30 years ago using the Blue Book, and although I disgreed with the style of role-play Gygax preferred, I will always remember that first time of wonder and excitement when my big brother found something he and I could share without actually punching each other.
That evening on the kitchen table he all at once tried to teach me english, drama, mythology, statistics and about the fearsome horror that is the bugbear. I don't think I will ever forget that moment, even though it was fleeting and we went back to punching each other soon afterwards. :)
Thank you Mr. Gygax for helping find a way for geeks everywhere to have a social life. You will be critically missed. (I rolled a 1)

If not for him, what would we have today for RPG's?
Would there even be RPGs? Perhpas they would only be referred to as fantasy games. Who knows. I played the pen and paper D&D and I loved it. It was all about using your imagination and cunning to survive. Now we are all force fed our imagination visually.
God Speed Gary.

D&D was a little before my time, but the effects of what this guy created so many years ago are still being felt. After all, he didn't just invent a game, but created an entire that is still as popular today as it was decade ago. Now that's an accomplishment. A salute to a great man, which so many people will miss.

Role-playing was an idea used in psychology already, and kids play cowboys & indians spontaneously, so maybe role-playing games would have existed on their own. But without Gygax and Arneson I don't think anyone would have tried to make money out of them! :D

Lol, me and my family used to play D&D all the time. My friends first got me into it when we were on camping trips and I learned that my parents used to play old school D&D back in the day (The same with Magic: the gathering).
This is sad that he's gone but he created something that will never die (kinda like Bill Gates and Microsoft).
D&D and RPG FOREVER!!!

This is incredibly sad news!!! My heart sank when I saw the title of this thread.
He died on March 4th and I can't believe I'm only hearing about this now.
He and his mind will be greatly missed. :(

I take it he didn't make that critical "Saving Throw"! :ahhhhh:
But seriously his work impacted not only people that played D&D but helped shape the video game world we know. Countless spin offs and games created in the very shadow of D&D. Happy Journeys!

Yeah, I was playing WoW when I got the news from a rss feed, so I announced it on the trade channel on my WoW server and people replied
"Who is Gary Gygax?"...
Now that made me sad.
