View Full Version : CPU running at 43% its full operating frequency?

My dad has a dell and according to vista performance and tunning center (whatever its called) my CPU is running at 43% its maximum frequency. So does this mean I am only getting 43% the processing power I should be getting?
Dell tech support said it would increase with usage.
However there have been times where I will have it running at 100% CPU usage and it stays 43% operating frequency!
So yeah... if 43% operating requency means we are only allowed to use 43% of our processing power then how do I set it to 100% on a dell?
Its a dimension E521 if that helps.

I am not sure what exactly you are looking at, if you can post a screenshot that would be helpful. (alt+print screen keys) :)

Well good thing your running a Dell for now. The CPU power you see that is being used of 43% does not mean you are stuck at that level. It just means that at that point in time you are using 43% of your CPU. When you game or do other things that require more load then you will see it jump to 100%. It is of no factor of speed. Just a usage percentage. Take your brain for instance. Right now you are probably using only 2%. It does not mean your retarded it just means that your brain does not require a whole lot of power to just read this paragraph. Your CPU works the same way. You don't need the full 100% usage to run solitaire. That would heat up your CPU unnecessarily. Hopefully this explains it for you as you are not losing power. But the thing is running at 43% all the time means something is running in the back ground as this is pretty high for idling. Myself at this very moment I am running at 6%.

6% is even a little high unless your running a lot of stuff in the background. Mines usealy at 1 but it depends on what processors your using. Like my Twin Dual Cores will have a lower usage than 1 DC since it has more power. You can get something to have your CPU operate at 100% usage but that is only used to make sure you have a stable overclock on your CPU.

My brain works great at 2% and me no retarded. So your CPU is retarded
Thats what he said, and it took more than 2% to understand

Gentlemen... BEHOLD!!!
I ran the stress test and the field circled still stated 43%!!! FYI, I am not your average joe/ american who knows close to nothing about computers. With a little more research I probably could take an A+ certification and pass.
I am pretty sure I could definitely get a Network+ Certification though.
So yeah, WTF!?!?! Why is it not working appropriately/why did dell set the frequency so low/how can I make it so that says 100% and I can use all my processing power when necessary (the crossed out field is the one I amassuming you speak of).
I also would like to make a correction. It is a dual core so each core should have 2.3GHz!

Disable all power savings in BIOS.

The only power savings option there was something to do with returning from sleep mode so that wasn't.
However, Cool & Quiet Technology was enabled and I disabled that and we are running at 100%! YAY! Idling at around 6%.
So yeah, thanks for the help.
If we could have a mod close this thread so that newcomers don't use it for spam later on that would be nice :)

I found this article deep in the Dell Support Web Site. I don't know if you have the Dell Network Assistant loaded on you Dad's machine, but it may be worth looking at.

Well, I honestly think dell assitance programs are a waste of hard drive space so yeah.... I uninstalled those anyways when looking for programs that are of no use to delete last night.
It's the thought that counts though so thanks!
