If you put your fan speed on 0% will it overheat on idle?
two of my friends say yes.. another says no. So just to clear things up.. =)
edit: more specifically, an 8800 GT

yes it will

Yes it'll over heat. There are passive cooling solutions out there for the 8800 but turning the fan off on a stock cooler isn't one of them.

Theres only one way to find out.

I think you should tell your one freind who says that it wont burn up to see a doctor. 8800 GT cooling = small heat sync - fan = burn up

Some cards, like a Zalman cooled 8800GT would be ok at 0% fan in 2D mode long as you have some PC cooling pushing some air over it.
But most cards it is a bad idea to do it.
yes it will overheat on load. Not likely on idle. It depends how big of a cooler you have.

It would be a bad idea. I got good airflow in my case (better in my old) and i did this in my old. I set the fan to 0% to see if that was making any noise, and forgot to turn it back on. I was surfing the forums then i look down at my temps (on my keyboard) and the GPU was at 95 and climbing so i quickly put it to 100% and it went back down to 55. So YES, it will burn up no matter what u got.
Unless u have an Aftermarket no fan heatsink.

For just about any graphics card, heck yes. You'd burn out the GPU extremely quickly, if the system didn't auto-reboot or shut down on you first.
The only passive cooler that doesn't need a fan is the Thermalright HR-03, but it still requires good case airflow from case fans.

I will throw my hat in with the "YES" votes. Why would you ever want to set your video card fan at 0% anyway? Sounds like someone has too much time on their hands :P jk

Isn't that like a common sense though? Not to affend your friends but of course, no fan equals no cool air. No cool air means no cooling for the card. It would be like people suffering without airconditioning in summer.

yes, it will overheat
