View Full Version : Need help with removing Audio Drivers in XP!
I need to remove all of the drivers that XP installs by default under 'Sound, video , and game controllers'. For some reason I can't figure it out. I'm trying to get onboard sound for a system other than the one in my sig. Need to get the realtek high definition audio on there in place of the legacy stuff XP throws in there.
I've done it before but only right after a clean install and I really don't want to reinstall windows.

Control Panel > Sound > Hardware
Click on what you want to remove from the list then,
Properties > Driver > Uninstall.

If I remember correctly I never had to uninstall XP's default sound device or sound drivers on my 680i SLI since they didn't even detect the realtek HD audio device, and if it did, try what Miker said and after everything was uninstalled and removed install the realtek drivers.
Installing the realtek high definition audio drivers should take precedence over the XP drivers once they are installed.
Try as I might.....
Seriously this is starting to get on my nerves. I couldn't actually delete the legacy drivers under 'sound, video, and controllers' in the Device Manager. What I could do was delete the drivers listed under properties but not the headings listed under 'sound, video....' in the device manager. I did reinstall the realtek and nothing. The HD Audio was not detected. I tried to add the HD Audio under 'Add Hardware' in the Device Manager and no go. It still doesn't work.
No I know why I like Vista this is a non-issue.

This never hurt to aks but is the onboard audio enabled in the BIOS?
Yes, it is. I just can't get XP SP2 to detect the HD Audio and install the drivers appropriately. Very frustrating. I don't even think I have to deal with the legacy garbage.
just a quick update, I installed sP3 on this comp but still no joy with getting HD Audio installed. If I can't figure this out I'm going to get a Audigy and just install that. I really don't want to reinstall windows.
