My external drive failed and I have installed a new drive in the case for storage to go with the primary drive that has xp installed. Bios would not recognise the new drive until I enabled raid, now it recognises it and I can add files to it but I still get the add new hardware wizard when I boot. When I click on load software automatically I get "hardware cannot be installed". Do I have to load raid drivers? Can this be done without losing data on either drive? Any help setting up raid would be greatly appreciated.

In BIOS set it to enhanced and make it say SATA, not RAID.

Hey Miker, could you be a little more specific,I don't see the enhanced setting anywhere in bios, just settings to enable raid and sata configurations. Thanks

Let me see if I understand your issue fully; the HD that was in your external HD drive enclosure died and when you installed a new HD in your external HD enclosure, the BIOS as well as Windows doesn't recognize the new HD that you installed in your HD enclosure?

The drive in the enclosure died, I installed a new drive in the tower, it is recognised, now I'm wondering if I can set them up in raid without losing any data. One drive has xp installed, the new one is used expressly for data(movies,mp3s,ipod backup) etc.

What raid do you have? Nvidia or Intel? Intel you can set up raid 0 or 1 starting with just one drive, Nvidia you have to reinstall windows.
I take it Nvidia because I was uber sneaky and read your SIG, in that case, no, you need to set up raid then reinstall windows.

Yes miker is right if you set up raid you will lose all data and have to start from scratch.

Unless you have intel raid, intel raid lets you set up raid-0 (or 1) with out losing data.
It is kind of cool, I can just say, put all data on disk 1, let it sit for 2 hours and it will move it over. Then I can change out my 2nd HD, that was maybe having a problem, and resetup raid-0 with out losing data. One of the many reasons I like intel Mobos.

Yes but Miker isnt that only if you had raid setup when you first installed your OS cause with my intel P35 chip MB in order to setup raid after the OS if it was setup in ide modes not raid, to change over to raid I had to start fresh. but yes your right about what you said that is nice about intel. and spdracer if you are already using your HDD in ide not raid then to keep your data u should be able to just add the second HDD in and format for storage your disks setup is basically the same as mine i have 630i shipset but to switch to raid you will definitely start fresh and my advice if you do is set it up in STRIPE.

Nope, you can have a PC with just one SATA drive, in a year, plug in a new drive (same as old one) and then just set up raid with out losing any info.

If he just pops the drive in, he shouldn't have to enable raid for the board to recognize the drive.

Right, we were just going off topic talking about intel raid. You should just be able to plug it in and have it work, unless for some reason your XP install doesn't have SATA support with out a driver.
