According to a test run by Nick Piggin, a college student in Canberra who has done work for the I/O scheduler on the Linux Kernel, FreeBSD clearly edges out the newest Linux kernel when using the SMP client. Though the statistic is not terribly large and may be due to a number of factors it really quite interesting as we having seen FreeBSD as a real contender for Folding in a long time.

This significant improvement is due to a number of factors, including a concerted effort by the FreeBSD team to make their OS more friendly for folders. The full article can be found at Slashdot (http://bsd.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/03/06/1313218&from=rss) along with links to test and papers that it references. Somehow I can't imagine the Linux programmers will take this lying down, but for now the results are intriguing.

This only applies for the newest Linux kernels, so if you haven't updated yet it may not apply to you.

I think the newer linux kernels have been adding some un-needed crap if you ask me. The best way to get a linux kernel running is to apply a CK (or similar) patch to the source and then compile it to best suit your machine. The difference is insane.

I think I'll have to give this BSD a go. ;-)
