According to this article (http://www.isgtw.org/?pid=1000946) distributed computing projects like: Folding@Home (http://folding.stanford.edu/) and Rosetta@Home (http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/) could help to drive humankind toward exponential growth in the Sciences. Even more incredible is that according to this theory when growth reaches a certain point massive, unparalleled, incredible change known as a Singularity (http://www.singinst.org/overview/whatisthesingularity) could drive our civilization forward in ways we could not possibly comprehend. A new revolution in knowledge, so to speak.

This idea depends a great deal on Moore's Law (http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/cpu/moore.ars) and Kurzweil's Law (http://www.kurzweilai.net/articles/art0610.html?printable=1), which have very real examples to back them up, though that does not exactly make it foolproof or even remotely correct. Still, even the chance that contributing to Folding@Home could lead not just to better health and curing certain diseases, but a technological explosion that drives humankind forward....even the birth of AI. Well, that is something to be proud of.
