Ok guys, my friend has a 8600GTS from EVGA. He has it clocked at 775/1086 and 1664 for the shader. :thumleft:
His CPU is an Athlon X2 @ 3Ghz. His RAM is 2Gb of DDR2 (I'm guessing at 960Mhz) and he is running the games off of a sataII HDD.
In Half-Life 2 he gets frames around 200fps at a resolution of 1600x1200. It runs flawlessly. 8)
In Counter Strike: Source with the same exact settings he gets 15-20fps.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why this is? Both games shouldn't have this much of a gap in performance since they're both running off the Steam engine.

Ive noticed CSS can be really gay soemtimes. I have NO idea why its doing that. Back in the day when i had a 9800XT and my best friend had a 6800GT my machine would perform better than his on CSS. Still to this day dont know why.

CSS is online, thus kills performance.

Even with only bots?
Even if it were online it shouldn't kill performance THAT much. I can get around 300 frames with my 7950GT online and that's pretty much the same offline.

He has to have some setting different between the two games.. both run on the source engine, and the minimum/ recommended specs are more or less the same. Even though it is online, that wont kill FPS much so there is definately something wrong there. Have him redownload CSS and see if that fixes it.. could be a bad file somewhere

Being online has nothing to do with FPS.

Not true... its the additional code in the game so it has an addition affect, just not much

Most people will never notice that. They will only notice lag from havign to high of pings. But if your playing just bots your not playing online at all so you get full FPS, or if your just using the stress test.

Online takes a lot of CPU and RAM to keep track of all the other players.

But yet still, he wasnt playing online. So were back to stage one as in online dosent matter.

Playing CSS offline requires bots.. bots require some CPU power. I know it doesnt explain the significant difference in FPS, but it does have some affect.

And remember, there are bots in Half Life 2 as well as some more physics.

HL2 was made in simple AI in it, CSS bots are a add-on, that need to be smarter then a HL2 bot.

Either way he shouldnt be getting such a difference between the 2. And he could use the stress test in CSS which does NOT need bots or online.
