Mozilla says Firefox 3 Beta 5 is “fastest Firefox ever”
Firefox 3 beta 5 (http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/36756/140/)
Seems that Mozilla is concentrating some of their effort at building a quicker Internet browser...which is good

That's wonderful, but I would question whether or not this thread is just a tiny bit misplaced. Perhaps General Applications & Utilities would be a better fit.

I read that they reduced the memory usage of firefox, that's the thing that's really killing me with Opera; most of the time it takes about 500 megs of ram.
So maybe, just maybe I'll switch to firefox. I like Opera, it's clean, simple and it just works, but I usually load a ton of apps at the same time (browser, game & compiler and text editor all at the same time, this morning is an exeption I only have my mail, WoW and Opera loaded. :) so anything that uses less ram is a win for me...
I'm going to wait for the release though. :)

I've gotten Firefox to use over a Gig before I had so many tabs and I was copy/pasting so much text into it. It was using all my CPU so I just had to end it. :magic:

Firefox has a memory leak, if you play a lot of flash on some versions you will take up 500m-1G easy.

Yah I had like 20 tabs open with youtube. The other 60 were stuff that I just forgot about that I was looking up but didn't want to close out of at that time.

I think Flash has a memory leak actually; just go to pimprig (pcapex) and leave the top banner running all night and Opera will be using 1 - 1.5 g in the morning...
It used to happen with pdf's too, but I haven't tested that out lately.
Right now I have 18 tabs opened on Opera and it's using only 146 megs, so I'm pretty sure the ram usage depends on the contents and plugins (and huge history buffer), not entirely on Opera.

Those with the beta, go to about:robots.
I usually use Opera, but I use Firefox when checking my gmail. I'm running Opera with about 12 tabs at a time, and it's currently using about 150MB of RAM.

Right now I'm running FF 2.0.0.13 with a B3D tab (this response), a Newegg tab, and an Asus FTP tab. I'm also downloading a manual for the Crosshair II Formula. It's using ~103Mb and 0-2% cpu. I'm also running a theme on FF in addition to 5 plugins.
One thing I don't like about Opera is it's interface. In Windows I can't tell a speed difference between it and FF but in Linux FF runs much better.
