View Full Version : How many optical drives is too "many"?
http://upload.cdfreaks.com/OC/tower.jpg
Now I admit, If I had that many optical drives, with sata connectors and black bezels, I would be damned happy.
I only play about 6 games, all which need a damned CD to run, and I have two optical drives.
lol.

I only have 2 as well and cannot see why you would need more unless you are selling pirated movies or something for extra cash.

I'm only running 1 at the moment, but I have a dual layer burner that I have as an upgrade to an old eMachine of mine that I play to install once I get a new case because it's beige and I dont want to make this case look any crappier than it already is.

let me rephrase my OP.
Im lazy.
not having to swtich out CD's to play diff games = happy jozy.
but the dude with this godliness tested optical drives apparently.

If you're using XP, get a copy of Alcohol 120, it'll set up as many virtual drives as you want, you can burn images of each disk to your HDD, and then just mount the image. I used it in Iraq, cause I wanted to keep my disks put away and my optical drive working as little as possible, to keep from killing it.

There is always fixed .exe files, just search google. No one should pirate games! Although switching CD/DVDs in and out all the time is a pain just to play a game you own. Oh yea and I only have 1 optical drive, but am considering 2 with my new pc, the 2nd will be a Blu-Ray player, if I decide to get it. I hardly ever burn anymore, don't have any need to!

Lol, it'd be a whole lot cheaper than buying 6 optical drives. Seriously, I loved this software but it doesn't work in Vista.
http://shop.alcohol-soft.com/en/purchase_120.php
EDIT: Just checked their system requirements, apparently it does work with Vista 32 and 64 bit now.

Is there any need to buy Alcohol 120 ? " Daemon Tools " is a great software which does the same as Alcohol & it's free.
That's a CD/DVD copier (not a PC) used for recording & for making pirated stuffz. These type of copiers generally have 10-12 drives.I use 2 optical drives & a virtual drive created by Daemon Tools & happy with it.
ya know what, hardware looks better then software !!!!

I don't know about you, but I don't think that first pic looks good. Looks like a bunch of crap thrown together. And the cable management is atrocious.

One can never have enough optical drives.

I agree i dont know anyone who would think that that looks good. The least they could have done is have the same disc drive those are all different colors! Imagine the wireing in that case lol. Very bad airflow.

That's not a computer.Who cares for the heat generated in a CD-copier or the colour of the optical drives ? But yes, it looks completely dull.

If you follow the link, it shows a side view pic as well. Wires everywhere, floppy drive laying in the bottom of the case. Disgusting.

Yeah followed the link and it is terrible. I would not be able to live with such a ugly system in my house.

The mismatched drives are bad enough. The drives on top are worse. The inside of the case is the last straw.

You don't need XP to run Alcohol 120%.
Try MagicDisc, it does the same stuff but is free.
Fixed EXE's are also a good alternative but might violate your eula.
Having that many drives is really pointless. If you were copying a bunch of cd's on a regular basis then I can see where it comes in handy.
All of you fail to grasp the point of this thread.
All of you fail to grasp the point of this thread.
And what might that be? All I see is a bunch of drives stacked up on top of each other. It's overkill IMO.
Btw, I feel like throwing that computer off a 20 story building strictly because of the horrendous cable management.

Wow if my one friend had wires lying around like that he would shoot himself. My eyes are like burning wonder what happens when one of those dies lol. And the horrendous IDE!!

So...much...orange!!!
Seriously though, I can see not wanting to use CD's in certain situations. Not only did I burn images so I wouldn't have to pull the disks out, but its great on a lappy, cause you can travel without carrying a giant CD case.

Game cracks are free, and are not illegal so you dont have to use your cds at all. I have a DVD burner installed but only use it during OS install. If i had a bigger flash drive id just put XP install on it. Also does anybody have any idea how old those pics are? Ive seen those floating around since 2004.

scuse me now?

Just what he said there free and not illegal. All you do is replace your games .exe and it runs without a disc. All new games load the whole game onto your hard drive so you dont need the disc, its just a measure to stop pirating.
Right... I dont play crysis. So yea.

No almost all new games require the disc. Some old games, all really old games dont require games. I would consider old games 2+ years old.
Dont know what your smokin then, couse every game i have ever had exept for one...maybe two (out of at least three dozen titles) has needed its disk in order to run.

Lol i dont smoke. Apparently your not old enough to have bought old games, so you wouldnt know.
Like what? Duke Nukem? Dinasour Park tycoon? Star Wraith?
Hell, Duke Nukem 3d is so old , i cant even play it on my laptop.

Those are older games heck i could say every MS DOS game lol. All of the COD's dont require a CD to play multilayer.
DS9 Holodeck adventure for DOS.....
how about that ^_-

OK, I run two drives (both IDE at the time). On is a DVD/RW for most programs and the other is a 52X CDRom to rip my CD's to MP3s. I do this for the simple reason that the 52X is more than twice as fast ripping MP3s as any other drive I have ever owned with the exception of a 32X SCSI CDRom. I tried using a SATA/IDE adaptor to clean up the cables, but the adaptors were flakey at best
If I were not ripping our library of CDs to MP3s (between 4-500 disks and growing) I would only use one drive. I am also a cheapskate when it comes to my case. I am using a beige case that is 6 or 7 years old. It is functionable and I don't see the need to change my case yet.

It would be a pretty good invention for a company that is listening to have a multi drive bay. You know with one slot but you feed in 20 cd's or DVD's or something. Something that would take up the space of 3 or 4 drive bays. I would buy one instantly if someone were to make one...hint..hint ;-) I think it would make a great addition to those who like to mod and take pride in their cases. Have to front that gives a digital readout of whatever your playing and heck maybe even have equalizer readouts and the like as well.
