Friend has a Gateway t-1628 and wants me to put XP on it. Anybody have any luck finding XP drivers for this thing? Google.com isnt getting me anywhere really.

Laptops that come with Vista are most likely incapable of running XP.

Best bet is to try Gateway's webiste if you haven't done so already.

Yea i did and they dont even have support for this model on their site. It stops at 1625. And Miker, thats not always true.

I would try the drivers for a 1625, most times when so many numbers are the same, there are very minor difference. Most of the hardware is probably identical, possibly a different proccy. Did you check to see which drivers were available for the 1625?

Only Vista drivers on their website.

That's the trouble with sticking with XP. Its going to get harder and harder to find drivers for new hardware.

But at the same time, get as much info as you can on the hardware because many of the large vendors use a lot of the same OEM hardware companies. You might be able to find drivers for your hardware on say..Dell's website.

Laptops with all the powersavings and all generally do not transfer.

They may not have any XP drivers for it. Quite a few manufacturers don't see a reason to support an OS that they don't ship with the computer, for cost cutting reasons.

Your best bet is to type in the serial# off the laptop, and then go from there since they don't specifically list that model on the download list.

We tried everything we could possible to find the drivers. And actualy we found everything but the audio drivers. We dont know the manufac that made the audio for this laptop. So we have no idea where to start.

The drivers for the slightly older model, though Vista drivers, should have some release notes, which will typically have the manufacturer name and model of the specific piece of hardware, like a sound card. Then you can try and find sound drivers for that hardware elsewhere, and you'll at least know what to look for.

Everythign im finding in this version are Sigma-tel Vista drivers.

Try this one, its for a Dell. My Dell to be specific. But it is the sigma-tel audio for XP.

Link (http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R171789&SystemID=INS_PNT_1501&servicetag=&os=WW1&osl=en&deviceid=8907&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=2&catid=3&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=3&fileid=235761)

And if its the wrong one, it'll just tell you it couldn't find the hardware that matches.

I got my Gateway T1628 over the weekend and I got a clean Vista/XP/Linux in there. However, I got a hard time finding the drivers for XP. I got the video driver from an AMD website and most of the drivers from Vista directory. I got everything working in XP except the audio driver. I had tried many different versions "IDT/Sigmatel Audio" driver from the Gateway Support website but no luck. PLs let me know if you found a solution to this problem.

Thx,

NLD

I found the solution to get the Gateway T-1628 audio working in Windows XP. Here is what I did (if you got a yellow exclamation on the device "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio", you might need to reinstall WinXP again).

1)Do a clean Windows XP Install.
2)Get Video driver from an AMD webiste (filename:8-4-igp_xp32_dd_ccc_wdm_sb_gart_enu_60999.exe)
3)Wireless driver (got from this file name :"RTL8187B_logo_6.1074.0406_silent_install.exe")
4)Sound card: I got this file("D00758-001-001") from the Gateway website
5)The rest of the drivers I got it from Vista (b/c I dual boot)

These files can be download by Googling.

Hopes this info help. Good Luck.

Youll have to find an audio driver. If what that guy up there says, you can get the UAA bus driver update from M$ themself.
