Does the PC show "Vista" when windows loads? That could be the problem.

He wanted Vista so i gave it to him. Before i updated it was fine. Now if i go to rename a folder it will give me an error.

Did it put you in some super restricted user?

It could be more helpful is you posted a screenshot of what the error is or atleast describe what it says.

Oh. That happened to me the first time i installed vista. Its because of update failure.. if this update does its stuff wrong... that happends.

Here. I think this is the way.

I had this problem too and I *think* there was a hotfix for it but I don't remember how it went.

Well ive tried 5 times to check and i have no more. Also, it was an update that did this. I can assure you that cause the last time i installed i had a problem. I did updates this time and lo and behold i cant rename folders.

Upgrade to XP or reinstall Vista. Is it really worth the time to trouble shoot an error on a new load when reloading should be a lot quicker.

Yes considering it isnt my PC (mine has XP) and it does it every time i do the updates. Also, i get an error trying to do SP1 too or else i would.

I hate to laugh at other people's problems, but this just seemed funny. I've not seen this odd problem before.
If there is an error about upgrading it to SP1 as well, then it's best to cut your losses and reinstall again... and be very careful about installing drivers + updates in the right order. Or better yet install SP1 directly before even attempting to update a new install.
I hate to say it, but cutting your losses now looks like the best bet. Who knows what else is messed up in that system as well at this point.

This IS a fresh install. The first thing i do is try to install SP1, dosent work. Install updates then the folders wont rename. So obviously its a Vista problem becasue i havent done a thing to it. No drivers nothing. Install and then try to update.
I think im gonna tell him to kiss Vista goodbye and just use XP.
Are you able to delete files ?
Try in safe mode ?

Vista can be real painful sometimes.I was using Vista Dell OEM copy.It was running very well but after i've installed SP1, now a message is popping-up in about every 30 minutes that " Your windows Licence is about to expire in 0 (zero) days ".The licence isn't expiring though.I can still see that windows is activated & it's a Dell OEM but the message is still showing.Quite irritating. :(

Well i solved the problem the hard way. I gave hiim the option of 32bit instead (oddly it dosent do that problem) or XP. He said just go with XP. Got it running on his machine and he thanks me for not letting him use Vista.
