View Full Version : Vista does not suck as bad I thought.

Okay. I have finally moved my system to Vista Ultimate 64 (after my mobo died and had to install a new mobo that's Intel based chipset which I thought that it's time to upgrade from XP and also install the new x3320).
I got to say, I am a bit surprised by how well it actually functions. I originally thought that I may have lots of issue with the driver due to the 64bit and maybe even instability problem. So far, things are looking good. There are some annoyances, specially the constant admin privildege and such but overall, it's fairly functional and issue-free.
I have yet to install all of my hardware and software so maybe problem may come a bit later. So far, only my old Canon scanner is not working but the rest of hardware work fairly well.
After this, I think I will plan to upgrade all of the system in the house to Vista soon.
PS, are there any good anti-spam/spyware software out there works for Vista 64bit? I was using the Spyware Doctor but that software has no Vista 64 out yet.

You should check out this site (http://www.iexbeta.com/wiki/index.php/Windows_Vista_Software_Compatibility_List). It lists whether or not a piece of software is 64 is compatible with 64-bit Vista and includes quite examples of anti-spam/spyware software. I would suggest Lavasoft Adaware SE Personal and Spywareblaster among those listed. Counterspy is supposed to be a decent program as well, though I have never actually tried it myself. Unfortunately I use 32 bit, so my reference point is more distant and what works on my version probably wouldn't work on yours.

I would say Spybot Search & Destroy v1.5 (http://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.htmlhttp://www.safer-networking.org/en/mirrors/index.html).Works on Vista 64.

I did the Vista 64 thing 4 months ago, and I also have to say everything is not doom and gloom as a lot of people is portraying. My canon scanner is also the only hardware that didn't like the move, no Vista drivers 32 or 64 bits.
I'm using Eset Smart Security and Counterspy both 64 bits enable. You could also try Bitdefender. They are all pretty low on resource. Norton also has a 64 bit edition out but its a resource hog.;-)

Oh but of course! It's Norton!
I've really not had any software problems at all except for this one Japanese game that I'm not supposed to be installing anyways because It's made to only run for people in Japan.

i also have a canon scanner that does not have drive for vista64 (there's driver for vista32 however, sucks. And Canon is asking me ot upgrade to a vista compatible scanner, this is just unacceptable in my opinion).

It is not Canon's falt M$ make it so it didn't work.
Actualy, it is Canon's fault, if they dont make drivers for it.
The OS company is only at fault it they dont releae certian documents, which microsoft did do for vista. Canon just wants more money so it wont supply the proper drivers for the scanner.
Try using the base drivers in shista for the scanner.

Of course its Canon fault, it doesn't take much to work up a set of drivers for a scanner. Scanner technology has not change that much over the last decade. I don't need a new scanner, just my old one with working drivers. I cannot differentiate the scan result between my old or the new Vista one. But it might be a split second faster.

Blasphemy!! (J/K)
Good to know it is working well for you Victor! That issue with scanners is the most common thing I've heard, most companies see it as an convenient excuse to force their customers to buy a newer model.
I've read about Vista's UAC, I'm not so sure it's really useful to have enabled anymore. Especially after one MS exec said it was basically put in there to "annoy users". :ahhhhh: I put up with it for a few months, but then I went into my User Profile, and there is a checkbox in there that lets you disable UAC for your specific user account. I'd strongly suggest doing this, but that's just me. :)

I'd do the same as the UAC did nothing but annoy me.

After using Linux a bit, it is useful, just not in all the area's MS applies it.
However it is very use full if you do things the right way, use one limited account, and when UAC prompts you you enter your root credentials and are good to go.
About the Scanner, it is Canon's fault, they, and especially Belkin are very cheap, wanna buy a model that works with Vista? Well you have to get the Suer hyper shiney uber wireless G model for only $40 more.
Marketing and thats it.
Actually just look at what MS has been able to do with WHQL drivers, any time a new one comes out for say Nvidia, Nvidia gives it to MS, who then gives you the option to upgrade to it via MS update.

Home Premium 64 bit. I really have not had any problems other than attempting to run the Crysis demo and my CA suite. My hope is that it does not become the ME of yore. What is the next Windows edition? 7 something?

I think I will also disable the UAC as well, it's a bit annoying for sure.
I have to say, I think it's Canon's fault as well, they seem to come out with other model which is virtually identical to my scanner and have driver for it. I think they simply just want force users to buy a new one.
I found another issue, my UPS is unable to load its software due ot the fact that it would require admin privilege during boot. Anyone know how to get around it so it can automatically turn on during boot?

I recently built a new system and upgraded to Vista Ultimate64 against my better judgement. To my suprise I have found it to be quote satisfactory. It is definately not a low cost PC solution but my new machine runs it quite well. I did some Vista training, and there is a way to autoamtically upgrade rights without the prompt through the command line. I will post the steps to this forum later as I am at work and do not have my notes with me.

The problem with scanners as seen by companies who makes them is this; they do not have consumables. When they sell you a printer, you are hooked for at least $500 worth of ink during the life of your printer. But with a scanner, you brought it and thats it. How many people need to upgrade their scanners yearly?
The companies can't separate their scanner, printer, and fax machine business models. That is also why there is a ton of all in ones these days. You want to replace one? You replace all!

So far i love Vista, it seems very fast and stable. Even found drivers 64bit for my old Lexmark all in one. I am impressed with it and happy i purchased it.

I've been running Vista Ultimate 64-bit for almost a year now and all I can say is that I'm pretty satisifed with it.
Of course, it had its flaws, but I got over and solved most of the problems I've faced and right now everything is running fine and smoothly.
My feeling is that Vista is quite good and stable if you "know what you're doing" and have all drivers and SP up-to-date and...you also should have a machine "strong-enough" to "carry" it...;-)

Can't you simply right-click the exe it launches from and give it admin rights? That should work, if ya hadn't already solved this. ;) Sorry I didn't see your question sooner Victor!
As far as Vista goes... I had to cut my losses with my Windows XP install after a combination of issues made it unstable. It had some sort of issue with GDI objects, and ontop of that the Microsoft .NET 3.0 SP1 update didn't install properly, which I tracked down to be because I already had .NET 3.5 installed, and these can't be installed out of order without problems occuring. (I don't remember what program required .NET 3.5 and "helpfully" auto-installed it) I fixed that but in the process nuked everything that uses it, WMP, IE7, MS Office, all those programs wouldn't load.
A system restore later fixed it, but I decided to cut my losses since I'll never figure out what partly corrupted the GDI display software. So long winded story short I'm using Vista SP1 now... I'm not happy with Vista at all.

thanks for teh info rob. I did found out about the admin rights. Though it would still require me to click "Yes" during boot up which is a bit annoying. Well, at least it's working now. Sooner or later I think I wll have to disable the uac (havne't got time to mess around the settng now).

You can remove UAC from within your User Profiles panel, there's a checkbox to disable UAC on a account by acocunt basis, it is as quick as clicking a checkbox and hitting Save ;)

Poor vista  Vista's so bad that no one steals it (http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/06/10/vista-bad-steals)
It's a short non-news article from fudzilla but I just had to post it here.

I use a legit version of Vista but I've had so many issues with the DRM locking down the system because it thought it was nicked or (more often than not) the software licensing service screwed itself up that I'd hate to imagine actually trying to use a nicked copy. Vista is simply bloated with DRM services against this.
This is opposed to XP, which anyone could steal and use just as if it was a legitimate copy regardless of validated downloads or Windows Updates. So in other words... it could also be said that people don't want to steal Vista because of the morass they'll find themselves in, if they don't get locked out of their Vista install completely. ;) Hell, I use a legal, registered version and I still got locked out frequently on my previous install of Vista before my current one. And that was without changing motherboards, either.

believe it or not I had problems using vista 64 at first. Constant video driver crash when out of a game, yea it sounds weird. Never would happen in vista 32. Problem fixed when I updated my p5q pro bios that added memory compatibility fixes. Haven't had a single video crash since then. But now I'm looking forward to windows 7, I've fallen for the hype.
