Yikes. 45MB for an antivirus!
AVG sounds good. How much ram does it take? I might switch from Antivir

Mine didnt take much id have to look to get a exact number but unless youve got very little RAM youll be fine. Switch, AVG is a really good free antivirus program.

I tested it JOZ, I used it as the control when I reviewed the Yoggie GateKeeper Pico Pro.

While it doesn't provide the same blanket protection the Pico does it did catch all 24 threats I found with the gatekeeper and Kaspernsky.

Then I ran it against a little cdrom I keep around with about a hundred Virus ASM files on it. Two of which are totally new and unreleased, hence undiscovered and theoretically undetectable ( I wrote them in assembler class in school years ago) and it detected 99 out of a hundred.

The one unknown it did detect it didn't have a name for but recognized it as a threat. Pretty decent for a still free AntiVirus.

Never used Avast Avg is pretty good though. I've only seen one bug get past it in 3 years.

That one was stealth encrypted polymorphic, extremely rare and undiscovered at the time.

I'm sure it has it's flaws they all do. But heck it's free and it updates almost daily. Plus it won't kil your systems resources like mcaFEE and SNorton.

Proud to say I wont touch any virus oops I mean anti - virus software.

Been building and running comps since the early 90's and have never had a virus...

None of my clients comps have either with running no virus software...

Every person I've come across with a virus is someone who runs anti crap software....Hmmmm

I didnt eather, but then i got one and lost everything. Always better to be safe than sorry. Most of the people who i know who have gotten viruses didnt have anti-virus.

I use avast 4.8, is AVG better?

From my experience i would say AVG is better.

^^That's true, I was running my old computer without one for about 4 months and it turned out that I has 37 viruses on my computer when I ran my first scan.

I used to be the campus tech for the local University when I was in school, I stumbled on a campus wide infection of the "Stoned" virus.

Cleaned about 2000 infections in a month, turned out the campus shareware box of 5 1/4 floppies was infected and every new student, most of the professors and staff ad almost every lab machine had it.

It's a stupid little virus only corrupts a byte or two at a time over a long period of time. Until certain dates twice a year. Like about 2 weeks before Mid Term, and End of Year when term papers are due.

There were a lot of Virus ate my term paper excuses that year.

If you wanna go scanner free go Linux or Mac, if your on Windows and don't have one when you do get one I'm gonna poke fun.

I read on Wilder's Security that many people had problems installing this one.
RAM usage seems to have increased from 7.5 as well. I'll stick with the older verison for now until they cut support, which in on May 30 IIRC

For the person who asked whether or not Avast was better then AVG you may want to take a look at this (http://www.bjorn3d.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21337&highlight=antivirus). From my experience the detection rate of free antivirus programs tend to go in this order: Antivir, Clamwin, Avast, AVG from best to worst. Of course all detection rates are fairly high and you're unlikely to come across any common virus that any of them wouldn't pick up. Still it's comforting to know that you have the one that consistently detects more variants, though that it is not the only thing to keep in mind.

Many of these programs employ a rudimentary firewall that can save you from getting the virus in the first place. Also, AVG tends to have a much slicker interface then AVG or Avast and Clamwin is open source and depends on donations to keep going. In truth, there's no absolute way to tell, which one is better for you until you actually get a virus. That being said, I prefer Antivir and always have, but it would probably be best to search around a bit and try them all before you settle on one. That way you base your decision not on hearsay, but your personal experiences.

I've used AVG in the past and recommend it to all of my non-computer literate friends that own computers. It's free and it will do its thing automatically and none will be the wiser ;)

I've been using AVG 7.5 for a while now along with the Kaspersky standalone scanner and a few anti-spyware apps. I've been happy with AVG but I would certainly be willing to try a few different ones to see what will work best. This is a great site for comparisons of AV apps: http://www.av-comparatives.org/
