Hi,

I have a serious problem over here and I hope to be able to fix this today. The problem is that the MBR has been corrupted because the Linux Grub bootloader has been unable to correctly identify Windows XP during the installation which has been located on a second harddisk.

The Linux MBR has been written to the Windows disk and because of this I am unable to have the Windows disk up and running. I need to fix the Windows MBR somehow without reformatting the drive. What is your recommendations?

Help is greatly apprecitated! Thanks!

Boot off your XP CD. Then when it gets to the screen and ask if you want to do setup or go into recovery console go into recovery console.

It will ask you what partiton drive/partition you want to load into and you want to choose the windows one. It my ask for an administator password, if you did not put in a password then just hit enter, if you did enter it now and press enter.

Once in type FIXMBR. It will ask you if you are sure. type y and enter. Once that is done you will have to type exit for it to reboot the machine. Hope that works for you.

Make sure you also ahve the drive you are trying to work on selected as the first boot drive. doesn't have to be the first boot device just the first hard drive that boots.

Make sure you are working on the correct drive letter to match the drive with XP on it.

Do what Scott suggested again while checking the drive letter. Except also use "fixboot" in addition to "fixmbr".
