View Full Version : Freezing/restarts with 7900GS

I bought this 7900GS used on another forum in April (it's still covered as part of the Double Lifetime Warranty). It was working pretty fine for the first few weeks. However, in the last 2 weeks or so, I've been getting quite a few random restarts while gaming. The games I primarily play are MVP Baseball 2005, GTA: San Andreas and Trackmania Nations Forever. I've had instances where the game freezes and I have to restart the computer myself. I've also had my computer randomly reset on me in the middle of a game. Neither of these problems occur outside of gaming.

I've tried several different driver versions, and none have seemed to improve the situation. Among those are 93.71, 94.24, 169.21, some of the 173.xx and 174.xx drivers, and now the most recent driver set (175.16). The problem seems to be random, and could happen within the first 15 minutes of gaming or after 2+ hours.

I don't think overheating is an issue. The fan is automatically set to 100% all the time and temps never rise above 60-65 C. Still using stock cooling, and I never made any kind of modification to the card.

I tried taking the slight overclock off of my CPU and that hasn't done the trick either. I don't think it's a PSU issue. I had an XFX 8800GTS 512 prior to owning the 7900GS, and the GTS 512 ran perfectly and I never had one crash/restart.

If anyone has any tips on what I can do to try and resolve the situation, I'd be interested in hearing them. I don't mind sending this in for an RMA if it comes to that. Here are the rest of my specs:

C2D e4300
2 GB Micron DDR2-667 (no OC)
DFI Infinity P965-S
XFX 7900GS 256mb -- PV-T71P-UQF3 (http://www.xfxforce.com/web/product/listConfigurationDetails.jspa?productConfiguration Id=776294)
CorsairHX 520W PSU

Thanks to anyone who can help, much appreciated :)

The temps look good so I don't think that is a problem. It also doesn't look like a driver issue as you have gone ahead and tested a few different versions. Any chance of being able to test another video card in this system or this video card in another system? I would start a support ticket at www.xfxforce.com so they can help further.

Thanks for the advice. Unfortunately, I don't have any other PCI-E cards on hand. And there aren't any other computers with PCI-E slots that I can use to test out the 7900 GS.

I created a ticket at XFXforce.com, as well.

Does anyone know how long it usually takes to get a response after creating a ticket? I started this one on 6/1 and don't have a response yet. But I've never created a ticket before, so maybe it takes a few days. Just curious when I can expect to hear back from an XFX technician.
