I had to pass on that one I have 8 PSU in the closet and a 1k Toughpower on the way with a VGA Express 450 5 1/4 drive bay dedicated GPU PSU coming in the same Box.

If ya get lucky and get one I'd put it to a Digital PSU tester and look at the -12v rail, on some of the Cooler Masters I've run they were way out of bounds (on their own tester).

Definately staying out of this also. I usualy have no problem beta testing.. but when its a power supply there is a lot that can go wrong. If something happens.. odds are CoolerMaster isnt at fault.

I signed up, I'm going to test it on an older system first to make sure its good and let it set for 24 hours or more, then try it in my main rig.

Beta test a PSU???
Holy moly what is the world coming to!

It might just be another way for the manufacturer to get reviews of the product :)

I seriously doubt they would send you something that might damage your hardware.

It kinda makes me wonder why they can't do any in house testing.

coxmaster
06-13-2008, 02:34 AM
Im pretty sure its just a way for them to give away 30 PSUs in hopes of a good review and more sales. Either way.. i dont need a PSU so im not going to enter.

It kinda makes me wonder why they can't do any in house testing.

the in house is allways based on controlled enviorments . not on a wide range of systems . so when a psu is put out on the market theres no qurentee it will work correctly .. this way it gives more information on how the psu works before its offically released and to fix any major bugs prior to release .. i signed up my self . but like a few others its gonna be tested on a older one first and rails be checked prior to my machine if i do get a chance .. i dont need a psu myself . but if my input can help others or make a product better for others then i am all for it ...

I guess they'll be shipping them soon.

By submitting the entry, Contestant is warranting that he/she will be able to comply with testing results and provide them by the required date of 06/27/08.

Well I figure since Coolermaster is a big company and all that they would have several different test benches with the best hardware that can push their PSUs to the limit or at the least, a load tester where HardOCP and JonnyGURU would come to mind.

We want you guys to stress the PSU as much as possible and comments or complaints on anything you could find.

ditto,

though, if i get it ill be doing a 7 week run most likely. and then returning a PSU i brought from micro and replacing that with this if if, i get accepted.

slugbug

No worries guys: These PSU are mainly production samples so there's nothing for you to worry. These are the samples we send to reviewers to test our products in.

So what exactly do they mean by reporting back our results? Do they want us to test the voltage, efficiency, etc. because I do not have the necessary equipment. If it was just a general stability under stress kinda test, I'll sign up.

Can you report back, slugbug. :)

By the way, kudos on getting Canada in on this!

joz

They want to know if the PSU can handle what "normal" enthusiests and gamers can throw it at (reviewers dont count as "normal" use.)

ahsalloum
06-13-2008, 10:03 AM
So when they say test results, they mean basically a report of the performance of the unit and its general stability, right?

did the thunderstorm kill it, or did it turn right back on.

Did the paint your little sibling get in/on it ruin it/no-worky?

I signed up for the test. I have 2 Cooler Master eXtreme 500Watt PS now. One is going in a system that I am going to try to put online this weekend to burn in the CPU. I could always use a spare PS laying around as I have lost 1 UPS and 2 surge protector from a lightning storm a couple weeks ago. I also lost an older 300 Watt and a socket 754 MB with one of the surge protectors.

If I were choosen, I would put it in one of my systems that I am OCing and folding with for a stress test.

Seems a little bit risky but I'm sure they're in a decent enough state at this stage that it won't catch fire or roast your parts.

according to r big ( site admin ) these are samples they send out to reviewers . plus i dont think theres anything wrong with them . just i am skiddish nowadays with new psu's i had a brand new one take out 3 hdd's on a first start up ... ( it wasnt a cm one )

I think is partially a great marketing scheme guys, I dont think they would be sending out some PSU that could do the opposite of gets some word of mouth going.

Methious
06-14-2008, 02:38 PM
It's probably for a variety of systems and hardware. Like Tagan had a series of BZ PSU come out that buzz with certain models of 8800 GTX cards. They bugged me for a month to test those BZ models. Finally I tested the heck out of 2 and now I use them on an every day basis.

The sign up page says that Type of system or components is the determining factor so their looking for some thing specific.

Wouldn't surprise me if there looking for dual graphics cards.

Methious
06-14-2008, 03:18 PM
My guess would be Dual single cards or SLI/Crossfire. Heaviest use of power with those and an OCed system.

Raptorfury
06-14-2008, 09:29 PM
well cant really stress a 1100 watt psu with a dual core cpu @ 3.6 gigz with a single 3870 . that system barly work a 650 psu ..

Methious
06-14-2008, 09:55 PM
You'd be surprised I use a wall to machine voltage tester in reviews, Q6600, 2 gig ddr3, 3 hard drives, 8800 gt machine and video OCed, machine to 3.2, video from 625/900 to 695/975, all 4 cores running Orthos, video card running 3dMarks2006, and all three hard drives running read tests it wasn't even pulling 450 from the wall.

80% efficiency = 360 watts from the PSU. Probably wasn't even running at 80% because typically 80% is at full capacity, as the load drops the efficiency drops also.

Raptorfury
06-14-2008, 10:38 PM
so with that in mind i dont think a 900 1100 watt psu be a good match up . i barely scratch my 850 with my system , its a q6600 e0 @ 3.8 4 gigs of mem i did have 3870x2 and a 3870 crossfire x 4 hdds 2 in raid 2 in back up both of the video cards maxed overclock on all cores ( i bios modded each core to run 892/953 ( 3870x2 ) and 866/1266 ( 3870 ) now i all run in graphic cards is the 3870x2 . granted its allways nice to have a big psu in the compy then run one that meets minimum requirements ..

What fun is it if there are no risk? Risking something and then not losing it is much better than not risking anything at all. ;)

I would test any PSU out since almost anything is better than my current Hipro PSU....

I also got approved to test the 900W unit. Might be a bit overkill for my system (3 SATA HD's, q6600, geforce 9600GT, 4Gb RAM) but hey they approved me and just emailed me to verify my zip code cause apparently I didn't include it. They said it should ship out today and I should complete the testing by the 27th which doesn't leave much time (I am guessing they are shipping from Pacific as they said to respond by 4PM PST).

I did not get an e-mail either. It also looks like I am going to have to go out and buy a larger Power Supply. With the link in this form for Power Supply Calculator, it states the system I am building will use 440 watts. I have a 500 watt power supply, but I want to have an 50% overhead or about 650-700 watts.

Whats your system?

huynhc
06-19-2008, 05:17 AM
I have a similar spec'd system to yours:

c2q 6600 (ran at 3.0ghz), 2x1TB HD, 1x640GB HD, 1x500GB external USB, xfx 9600GT 512MB [Fatal1ty FC-ZV9 heatsink/fan runs at 38 idle and 43 at full load stress with fan on low/medium speed](750mhz/1050mhz/shader.. i forget), 4GB G-Skill PC8000 DDR2-1066 mhz ram, OCZ stealthxstream 600W(i just bought this...), Gigabyte P35-DQ6 v1.0, and a silverstone lc10m HTPC case. I don't OC the c2q much cause I cant fit my vendetta 2 fan into my HTPC (it is a hair too short). I am prolly going to piece together another system down the road.... I did state I am in the healthcare industry and do load medical programs and patient database on my computer so that may have pushed me over (my rig is built more for stablitity than for insane OC speeds). I also have 2 other HTPC builds I have that are lower spec'd as the above mentioned one doubles as my gaming rig. I do have a centurion case laying around but I like to remote power on too much to get rid of my current case as it is programmed into my Harmony 1000 universal remote and also fits into my HT cabinet. I did mention the whole HTPC setup to CM as well which may have helped in the tech knowledge dept.

yea i think they are based in california so if you are west coast youll prolly receive the PSUs first. Since I am clear across the country (philadelphia), seems like itd be here monday/tuesday or something which gives me almost no time to test it out if they didnt send it 3-day or something (my estimate is using UPS ground). Anyone in the BETTER half of the country get theirs yet? (I say better half because I'm biased and am originally from CA where I plan to move back to :P )
