View Full Version : 266mhz->333Mhz fsb tape mod!

Hi guys,
I picked up this mod on another forum, forgot which one:)

It's supposed to raise the default FSB speed from 266Mhz to 333Mhz on a Q6600. It should work on other cpu's (C2D and C2Q) as well.
Now, it seems to leave all other things intact so the Q6600 runs at 3Ghz out of the box, at default vcore and the ram speed is not affected so, whilst the Q6600 runs at 1333FSB in stead of 1066Mhz, the ram remains at 800Mhz (in case of 800Mhz ram:) ). Overclocking further therefore leads to less strain on the memory controller as you can keep the ram<->fsb synced when using a higher cpu clock than in case of a 1066Mhz FSB. See my point? Some say, this eases overclocking to even higher speeds.
Now, my question is this....... I now run my cpu at 3Ghz and I had to raise the spp voltage to achieve that speed to 1.3v. When I oc my cpu to 3.2Ghz (1423Mhz fsb, memdiv 3:2, memspeed 948Mhz) I need 1.5v on my spp to remain stable. If I use the tape mod, could I use the default spp voltage? If so, This mod wil raise the overclocking potential of the combination of my mobo and cpu.

As far as I know this pin mod or BSEL mod as its called changes the bootstrap to the desired MHz out of the box so to speak. I'm not a expert on this subject per say but I think a BSEL mod wouldn't change the way you would normally overclock as far as voltage settings are concerned so theres a good chance you'll still need to increase the SPP voltage.
Now as far as the BSEL mod putting less of a strain on the memory controller, I don't really know.

Ok, first results:
I did the mod and it works. I set all voltages to default (auto) and the bios selects 1.38v (actual) as default vcore, 1.4 for the fsb and spp en 1.85 for the ram.
The cpu (Q6600G0) is running at 3Ghz by default and the ram, sync, is running 800Mhz.
I raised the fsb to 1512 (3.4Ghz) and the ram is now approx 900Mhz (sync!) and I upped the ram voltage to 2.1v.
The system is stable (4xprime) for over 15 minutes and counting now and the max load temp, which is weird, is just as high as without the tape mod and the cpu set to 3Ghz (1333x9) with a vcore of 1.285!
I'll keep running 4xprime and see if the system remains stable. For now, this seems like an unbelievably great result. Even more so because, before, I had to set the spp voltage to 1.5 to get 3.2Ghz stable for more than 10 minutes!
BTW. before, I had to set the memdiv to 3:2 at 3.2Ghz and my mem was 949Mhz, now I'm 3.4Ghz and my mem is set to sync (which is faster) and it's doing 900Mhz. I lowered the ram voltage to default with ntune or whatever it's called and my system remains stable whilst running 4xprime for allmost 25 minutes now:)

Did you run any memory bandwidth benchmarks comparing the 1:1 FSB ratio to the 3:2 FSB ratio?
What motherboard are you running?
I remember looking at a a website that has a whole slew of information on going about doing the BSEL mod on pretty much every 65nm Core2Duo chip but I can't seem to find it.

Yes I did and the memory write speed and the memory latence are a lot higher when running sync vs 3:2.
The read speed is a bit higher and the copy speed too.
I use the XFX680iLTsli board with the p07 bios right now and I'll be testing the mod with the p32 bios as well.

I remember that there was a website that has a whole slew of information on going about doing a BSEL mod on every Core2Duo chip bu I can't seem to find it.

I'll have to try this on my Q6600 B3 to see if I can get a higher OC than 3.0ghz. It'll go to 3.2ghz but not its not stable. Regular black electrical tape?

Will this give me a 3.0GHz on my E6600 without having to raise the voltage? If so, I'm definetely up for that.

apperently it will . as it select the proper voltage . but i dont see any real benefits . i mean if those allready in the 400 fsb range on that same cpu it doesnt do any good .. and the memory should be 1:1 after 400 fsb anyways ( ddr2 peeps ) . me i drop the multi down ( for those having a tough time goin beyond 3.3 gighz on this cpu ) to 8 set fsb to 400 put the mem 1:1 ( if ya running 6400 ) tighten it down to 4,4,4,12 ( this is where beauty of it comes in you can tighten em down even further if needed :) ) and let it run .. y have 1333 bus when u can have a 1600 ...

The mod is a little different for the E4*00 and Conroe based chips, so google before trying it on one of those.
