Hey just found this forum and looks great!
I just built my new computer (2 days ago) this is my specs: GA-X48-DQ6, 4 gb ram, intel 9300 quad (2.5), XFX GeForce 9800 GTX XXX (740) and vista 64-bit.
My problem is Crysis, I can play all other games on full, but when I play Crysis it just crashes after 10 minutes of play. And Windows gives me the message that the Graphic driver is not responding. I have used HWmonitor to check the temps. They go up over 60`c and is just rising. So I am wondering what is wrong? and should I downclock the card or something? Its a bit weird that I have to struggle so much with a brand new card :(

did you install the latest driver and update crysis?

firstly up the speed on the fan . use rvatuner for this purpose u dont need to overclock the card . also make sure you are using the most up to date drivers . the ones on cd's are normally old and out dated ..
tag victor ( u posted within 2 mins of me hehehehe ) now UR IT!!!!!!

Ive updated all the driver (Motherboard and graphics) :)

Ok now I made the fan run on 70%. But how good is this for the graphic card? I mean is this a permanent solution? The temps dropped by 10 Celsius and it all seems fine now!

Apply the latest patch to Crysis else try a different set of display drivers.

Tried both. I have set the fan to run at 70% with RivaTuner. But is this safe for the card? Or may I damage it in some way? Now everything is working, but I think its a bit silly that I have to manually set the fanspeed and that it does not set it automatically :(

if that's the case, then it means that your system may not be well ventilated. Make sure that your case has enough airflow.
60C for graphic card is perfectly normal (my 9800GTX, oc version) actually stays at around 60C idle and in games, it's only rise about 5-10C. So that's normal.

I have an Antec nine hundred, and I think it got a good airflow.
So why is it that everything is fixed when my fan speed is increased manually, why doesnt the card do this automatically? Silly for a new card :/
Thanks for all the answers! :)

If you leave the fan control on automatic, the card should increase fan speed as temperature raises. With the 9800 gtx, the card seems to think 60 degrees is a good temp, and at that temperature it stays at around 50% fan speed. If 70% works well for you then there's not problem leaving it at that speed, but you can leave it at auto if you want. The optimal temp range is 46-90º, so anywhere in between is fine.
You should download the latest card driver (175.16) cause they fixed some issues with the fan control. And download the latest patches for Crysis.

I have set it to auto, and I have the latest drivers, but it still crashes. I thought this only happened in Crysis, but it turns out that Settlers 6 also crashes.
As long as I set the fan speed to 50-60% it's all good.
Should I RMA the card, or is this happening with all the 9800gtx? :)

The XXX card is super hot, I would run the fan at 100% all of the time.

This won't damage the card in any way? And will the warranty still be valid? :)

Running the fan at 100% won't void your warranty or damage the fan. Those fans are pretty beefy. I have been running my 8800GTX XXX at 660/1625/1050 with the fan at 100% 24 hours a day since we launched it back in December of 06.

Ok, thanks. I wont have to worry then! :) But is this normal with the 9800 xxx cards? :P

Yes, it is normal. They are just hot cards in general, personally I put every card I buy at 100% and have never had a problem. Cooler is better, and these Stock GPU fans are not like cheap case fans, they will last forever.

Sorry from bringing this post up again..
I just downloaded the evga precision tool thingy, should I maybe try to downclock my card to 675, instead of 740? Cause I am still having some crashes, although RivaTuner helped alot.. Will this maybe fix the crashes?
Edit: ugh, tried.. not only did nvlddmkm stop responding, but "Superfetch" too, whatever that is? :S

Put it at 100% fan first and see if it was just heat making it crash.

I have already set the fans to 90%. But I thought about clocking the card down, so I maybe wouldnt have to worry about manually setting the fanspeed up:) btw, I set the fanspeed down to "Auto" when I tried clocking it down..

I had the same problem with the crysis crash, all you have to do is underclock the memory on rivatuner to about 1000 or around there. I still get the same frame rates and am running very high at 1600 x 900 in xp with the dx10 hack. Dont worry about the fans its not the problem.

I have had the same problem with the 9800 gtx xxx, all you have to do is underclock the memory to about 1000 or around there in stead of the 1140 displayed in rivatuner. I am running at 1600 x 900 with the dx10 hack in xphttp://www.bjorn3d.com/forum/images/icons/icon6.gif at very high and still playable frame rates at around 20 -25 fps

Well, I used the EVGA precision tools and underclocked it from 740 to 620 (or whatever the "not-factoryoc´ed" card is) and it still crashed..
I am pretty sure that in my case the temperature is the thing causing my problems. Because every time I set it to auto-control it hangs, either its CS, Crysis etc.
But the weird thing is that some times the fan just resets and goes into auto-mode, even if RivaTuner or Evga pres. is running... Any ideas? :)

Turn the fan speed up, if it crashes at stock speeds it could be the RAM or CPU.

Make sure you're using the latest version of motherboard driver and graphics card driver. Don't assume the manufacturer will have the latest driver available. Download them right from nVidia or AMD. Guru3D.com also has the latest video card drivers available.

I have the lastest drivers for both my mainboard and the graphic card. When I set the fan to max, everything works, but sometimes the fan just resets and goes "auto-control" and then everything crashes after a few mins of gaming. I cant control when this happens and its very irritating to never know when its going to happen. :(

Davidhg, what program do you change the fanspeed with?
davidhg
07-28-2008, 11:45 AM
RivaTuner :)
EDIT: I tried underclocking it, as someone posted above, and it works perfect now! Dont have to turn the fan speed up to 100% anymore...
Just another question. I used EVGA precision tools to do this, do I have to start up the program every time i turn on the computer, or is it underclocked for good now? :)

like i stated above the 9800 gtx xxx has a problem with the memory on crysis,if you underclock it with riva tuner or another you should be able to save the profile and have it load every time you start your os. or you can just have rivatuner star every time you boot and access your profile from the icon menu. mine is stable at 1100 x2 2200 mhz with no noticable effects.

You don't want a card too cold or you might run into electrical resistance. Too hot, and you guessed it, it'll fry. :icon_tiphat:
