Since I have been running my AC a lot this past week, I have shutting down my machine everyday around 8:00 PM. I noticed that EVERY SINGLE DAY last week I had a windows update. As I type this, Service Pack 1 is being installed even though it was installed on the 29th of May.
Any thoughts. The history shows well over 70 updates since 20 OCT 07.

After SP1 loaded, it attempted to reboot and never made it. When I start the machine it now stops on crcdisk.sys. I know that is the last thing to load but even using my “last known good configuration” I can’t get past the BSOD.

Any thoughts?

Ok, final part of the story.

Read this for the lowdown: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/946084

The “update” from Microsoft apparently put a small bit of code on my hard drive that would not allow me to even boot the computer with the aforementioned hard drive connected to the PC. The problem was so severe that I could not even reformat the HD (put it in a RAID5 setup and erased it). Even purchasing a new one, loading the OS and then reconnecting the offending HD, had no effect. Any time the HD was connected to the computer, I encountered a BSOD.

Lesson: Just beware of Vista 64 updates.
