View Full Version : xfx 780i shuts down when turned on
hi everyone,
I have an xfx 780i motherboard (got it 2-3 months ago) and it worked flawlessly till a week ago.
since then my system shuts down when i try to boot it up. when i press the power botton every component starts(fans, leds, motherboard display, everything starts) as normal but after 1 or 2 secs the pc shuts down and on the motherboard the yellow and the blue lights show up.
in order to turn it on right, I have to switch off the power supply, wait some time (2-3 minutes) and then again switch on the PSU and finally it turns on and works fine again.
my components are : q6600 CPU,corsair dominator 2x1GB,9800gtx,zalman 9700 CPU cooler and a tagan BZ 700 PSU
every single component has been tested except the motherboard and the PSU
I hope someone can help me out of this situation!

There is no way to tell without another power supply. Even if you have a smaller power supply you can remove your 9800 and boot with the other power supply. You won't get a display but it will show it it shuts off or not.
Yeah you're right.I'll try another PSU this week.
I read some others had this problem solved by downgrading to an older BIOS version. I need P02 or P03 versions to try this one but I can't find them.
Do you have one of these two? :ahhhhh:

The P03 is available on our site but the board has to boot up to be able to change the BIOS. The P06 will be the best BIOS to use in my opinion though.
sorry for my bad english but actually I can boot up my system.
In order to do that I have to turn off the power supply and wait some time. After that I hook up again my PSU and can finally turn on my rig.
I think the P03 on xfx site is corrupted since it's just an empty zipped folder.
Where can I find another one?
Thanx for your great support

PM me your email and I can email it to you. It is risky doing a BIOS flash with a risk of the system shutting down in the middle though. It will brick the board if it shuts down. I don't think this is a BIOS issue either.

ok I downgraded my BIOS...I don't know why windows is slower...Also the first time it booted it told me some files have been destroyed!:jawdrop:
EDIT:
OMG CPU-Z detects still P06!!!
after pressing "y" to program the bios i saw the first parts was blue colored and all the rest of it was white...so i guess the first hasn't been programmed
what do i have to do?

I would reflash the P06. I imagine you are seeing Version 6.00 PG in CPU-Z. That isn't the release number of the BIOS. Turn the Full Screen logo off in the BIOS and then save it and press the Pause key at the first screen. There is a release number. If it ends in P06 then you have P06. It shouldn't though.
I reflashed back to P06...it was unstable...tons of blue screens!
let's see if now it works
ok now when i try to turn on my pc all the fans and the lights on the motherboard (including the little LCD on it) turn on and go at maximum speed for like 30 seconds...after that, sometimes it loads the bios sometimes it just shuts off.

I thought that user name looked familiar. You are stalking me! :ahhhhh: I say we RMA that board. Make a ticket at http://www.xfxforce.com/en-us/Help/Support.aspx and PM me the ticket number.

:exactly:
you made me crack up.
BTW I'm from italy so i don't know what to do exactly for RMA since there is not such a thing as "XFX italy",right?

I believe in Europe that is through the retailer most of the time. You can make a ticket and ask Europe support though. If you make a ticket than make sure you put in there everything that happened and everything you did or they will ask you to do a lot of stuff. Try contacting your retailer and see if they can get you a replacement. :icon_tiphat:

Just a general note for people with Q6600s.
One thing to watch with Q6600s is how much vcore the board is actually applying. When I was running 3.0GHz I set 3.25v and was getting 1.28v. My chip will hardly do stock on 1.3v. Running the vcore up higher than I usually do to make sure I was getting what I was asking for fixed all stability problems. I need to set 1.5v in the BIOS to get 1.46v. with this mobo.

ok i'll try with the retailer first

3.25v would kill that chip even under liquid nitrogen. Even 1.5 is getting high for air. All Intel boards have Vdroop. The Vcore will always be lower than what it is set to in BIOS. The voltage regulation will change with their next socket so it will be interesting to see if the droop is gone. Since they are going with a QPI, from my understanding it should be.

3.25V???
there is no such a thing like that in the Vcore voltages tab in bios.
maybe you meant 1.325V.
However if you are on air cooling be careful when overvolting more than 1.4V. Try to keep the voltages as lowest as possible and every time you think you are stable test ur CPU with 4-5 hours of Prime95(smallftts test).
Look at your temps too.
If u are on watercooling then GO WILD!!!

IMHO 8+ hours Orthos small FFT. Prime95 isn't multithreaded. You would have to run multiple instances and set afinity to each core for each instance. Too much of a pain when Orthos is already four threads.
I hope he meant 1.325. If you are handy with a soldering iron you could get that bad boy up to 3.25v. It won't boot and probably never will again but you could get there. LOL
Is the new version of orthos optimized for quad core?
I knew orthos was good for two cores so you had to start two exes in different directories.

Well I should put my foot in my mouth. It is dual thread.

Sorry about that, it's 1.325v for 3.0GHz. I forgot my 1. My chip was getting 1.28v when I set 1.325v. It needs 1.46v for 3.6GHz and I have to set 1.5v to actually get that.
1.46v @ 3.6GHz has been fine for me on a Q6600 G-0 using a Thermalright Ultra Extreme with two fans in push pull.
