View Full Version : Joined the 680i no boot club!
Yeah for me.
Has been working great since December then a couple days ago I had a couple lock-ups, booted me out of UT3 a couple times. On restart I notice CPU speed is not correct, bios is at defaults, RAM voltage is wrong. Set bios back the way I had it for six months and no post, no video, no beeps, all LEDs lit.
So I start looking up 680i failures and what do I see? It looks like I'm not alone by a long shot and I'm not impressed. I originally bought the board after reading great reviews. Now I wish
I had stuck with an intel chipset.

OK, I ordered the Soyo error code card and PSU tester. Guess it's wait and see time.
Meanwhile I've swapped everything in, out, and around but the power supply. Would have been nice if XFX had sprung for the little speaker the EVGA board has, I hate not being able to hear post beeps or not. And I can't tell anything from the three LEDs, I don't know if anyone knows what they signify...

Could you post the error code here so my techs can look into it?
As soon as I get the card I'll post what is shows. Sounds like some versions have a built-in code display?
Thanks for the reply Scott.
My box:
Ultra Grid case with Ultra modular 700W PSU
XFX 680i LT SLI
Foxconn 7900GS OC
2 GIG Corsair XMS2 6400
Intel E4500 C2D
Wireless NIC
Seagate Barracuda SATA
Some generic DVD RW
I'm in contact with XFX tech support and I must say they are helpful and haven't left me hanging. I'm dealing with Erik and he's given me a couple options that I could use if I hadn't already ordered the trouble-shooting hardware. At this point I'd have to give XFX a thumbs up on support and realize that the board is a vender issue and not made by them.:thumleft:
OK, I have a new board. I set everything up and it won't boot, stops on code C1 (memory controller) some of you already see where this is going I bet. Deep breath, try the RAM thing I've read about. Each stick works in the DIMM2 slot though NTune is telling me it is in DIMM0. One time in the first slot it hung on C1 then continued then stuck on C1, another time 1d or 0d. SO I can use one DIMM slot, obviously that won't cut it. The date on the board is 2/08 v1.1 and it looks new...:help:

PM me your support ticket number so I can look over all of the details from before. Two boards having issues, there basically has to be a common link.

I've been repairing puters for 25 years now, got a degree in them.
You have an Ultra 700 Watt PSU supply, I'm betting it has the wide ribbon type cables and is the Ultra Grid case/PSU combo.
Google the PSU and you'll find it's an equipment killer. If your looking for a common link between systems causing a problem looking at the PSU would be a good idea.
Go for a good PSU like a TT Tough Power, Seasonic, Corsair (620), Sparkle, or Tagan. Your not in the boat alone, I got the Case/PSU combo a while back for Christmas (they didn't consult me about it), PSU tested bad out of the box, failed multiple testers, failed on an Oscilloscope at a local shop. Luckily I got a store credit for the combo.
If your looking for a good suspect, check the rap sheet on that PSU Ultra should be ashamed.
That's the first part I tested before sending the first board back. All voltages tested good. I can't test under load however.
Called ULTRA about the power supply. She told me they don't offer the 700w anymore so she would have to upgrade me to the X3 1000w unit for F.R.E.E., bummer I know. Anyway, she gave me an RMA and asked to cross-ship, she also emailed me a UPS shipping slip to send the old unit back on their dime! I wish someone else would go that far for the customer...
Well, new board arrived the end of the week so I waited until today to rebuild. Fired right up, started downloading email and the monitor went black. I just sat there for a minute and let it sink in.
Shut the power off and tried to restart. Nothing.
Popped the case and put the code reader in.
It starts with "FF" but won't go any farther. CPU? I pull and replace, check pins, even pull the same CPU from a friends box and try it in mine. Nothing. Put it back in his and it fires right up.
Tested new 1000watt PSU everything tests fine. Disconnect and reconnect cables, nothing.
Try RAM in all slots, different configurations, nothing.
Try to reset the bios with the jumper, nothing.
At this point I'll mess with it for the weekend and then I'm done with this. I'm buying a different manufacturers board and will use the same components. If a different brand of board works with my stuff I will ask XFX politely for my money back. Once. If that doesn't work I will lawyer up and take XFX to small claims court.
It should not have gone this far. Thrice bitten...:explode:

I honestly don't think it's your motherboard, it is probably another component. Is everything grounded right?
What CPU are you running? Maybe it could be your RAM? Is it even compatible with your board?
The first board ran for six months.
Second board would boot on Dimm3 only. Also replaced PSU just in case.
This board worked for five minutes now shows "FF" (CPU or Bios) issue but I swapped in another identical CPU that worked in a friends 680i before and after.
CPU is an E4500.
RAM is Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800mhz
PSU is a New ULTRA X3 1000w
Board is not in a case.
I'm calm now. Just haven't been able to play UT3 for about two months now. On the bright side, quitting cold turkey seems to have broken the diction. :)

What Heatsink/Fan combo are you running? I am running a waterblock and it was screwed down too tightly, so I had the same problem. Just quit one day. Pulled the cmos battery out for 5 hours and it booted just fine. Had it running again, noticed that the CPU temp in the BIOS was -41C, which is impossible since I'm just running water. Pulled the CPU, reseated, didn't tighten the heatsink down so tightly, no problems since then. This was on a 680i. Two things could cause it. Either it flexed the motherboard, or it compressed the CPU, but either way, just a little bit looser and it worked just fine.
Cooler Master X Dream 4, it uses the push-pins
PSU is running at +12.5, -12.5 on my tester, this is I believe close to max allowable.
I seem to have spooked the techs.

Sorry. When something falls off of the radar I don't see it again until it is bold for new messages. PM me your ticket number so that I can read over everything that was done.
New Asus board has no problems running my gear. XFX just wants to give me another 680LT. I'll probably do it just to sell and pay for part of the Asus if I can find a sucker.
Yes besides me...
XFX wouldn't even trade me a GF5200 for this board. I don't blame them.
E4500 running at 2.9 on P5Q at stock voltage!
What is a new 680i LT worth? I'll be selling the one I get back before it disintegrates in my hands:lol:.
Talked to XFX on the phone today.
If you have an issue evidently it is better to call. I finally found a tech that would go farther than sending me the same problem again.
I'd like to thank Brian for going the extra distance to try to help out a customer. He talked to his boss and is working to get me an alternative to the 680i LT. I don't want to jinx anything so I'll leave it at that for now.
:ole:
Well, no dice. They don't give a crap if I've had it with their products. They don't care that I've had three 680i boards but it all works fine in an Asus board. Brian tried I'll give him that much, at least that's what he told me...
This will be the last product I buy from XFX. Ever. Fore-ever. Period. Quote me on that. Can you tell I'm pissed? I hope so. If I buy any Nvidia based motherboards again (not likely) it will be EVGA. When I buy a new video card it will be EVGA.
I'm going to play a game and see how many people I can turn away from XFX products by just telling them my story. Anyone want to bet I can cost them more in lost sales than exchanging that pile of F******* S*** 680i with a video card would have cost? It's on now.:devildance:
The roller coaster continues...
Brian posted back to me that he convinced his boss to give me a 9800GT,
Wait for it,
For $85!
:frown:
Looks like Newegg has them with COD4 for $110 after rebate.
Deal or No deal?
I told tech support to go ahead and send me board number 4. I'm pretty disappointed in XFX customer service at this point.
I'll be contacting the BBB Monday to see what they have to say about it. I believe I can give them enough information from multiple forums and motherboard reviews for them to see the issue.
Hell even EVGA does better for their customers.
Must have angered some one at XFX. They sent me a refurb packed in maybe a dozen foam peanuts, taped into the inner green packaging. Maybe I shouldn't have said I was going to pawn it on Ebay?
That or they are running out of new boards and have to fix the crap we send back. I suppose they are hoping to hold out until I can't afford or won't bother to pay for shipping any longer.
They are right on. If this one doesn't work I figure it will cost less to ship if I grind it into dust and pour it into an envelope. Then I'd have the FBI on my ass for sending a greenish powder through the mail!
Wow, XFX is an awesome company! If I could meet the guys that wrote the glowing reviews I read last year I would kick them square in the nuts.:icon_shock:

Say what you want, mine still runs flawlessly.
and I hope it continues to perform without issue. I wish I could get one like yours. My buddy has the other one I bought at the same time, runs like a champ. Good thing too because I would hate to have to go through this crap again and have him hating me for talking him into an XFX board.

How soon we forget!
How soon we forget!
And then they send me a refurb because I told them I was going to sell it. Shouldn't the refurb have some documentation stating when it was fixed or tested or something other than an obviously well used motherboard in an anti-static envelope (no buble-wrap envelope) with a dozen foam peanuts in the inner green packaging taped up the way my four year old wraps Christmas presents?
I wrapped the dead board better than that for Christs sake!

Actually with all the complaining you've done here, borderline insulting the techs in the forum (who knows what you said in private e-mail) and threatening all the different ways you're going to stick it to XFX, I'd have done the same thing.

i've done the same too b/c of my disatisfaction.. u're entitled too and u should so this way others are aware of what probs exist.. or else more suckers like us will spend our money on defects.. no way and this company should be ashamed for dealing w/ their struggling customers in such a manner..
how many times do u hear other co's doing the same thing and once the news gets a hold of it then u see all the refunds and apologies begin.. didn't ford have a similair problem w/ the explorer back in the day w/ their tires.. passing the buck b/w goodyear and them until how many lost their lives.. even though this isn't as drastic of a situation it still merits mentioning here as a comparison.. but in continuation w/ my example, any time a car company has a defect they issue a recall and service all those customers to keep em as customers and build loyalty by showing that they care.. what are we any different.. didn't we spend money to buy their products.. and for how long now have they been aware of the issue.. and yet no resolution has been accompanied.. so go ahead an keep speaking ur mind.. peace..

I didn't say he can't speak his mind. I just said that if I were XFX, and there is no way to please the guy, I'd give him a refurb to sell on Ebay too. I thought the deal they offered him was pretty decent. If it doesn't work for him, he's entitled to sell the mobo on Ebay just like he said he was going to. You guys are the VAST minority of users. The overwhelming majority have had no trouble with their 680i, myself included.

I thought I spoke pretty well of the techs up until this last board. What exactly was insulting to the techs?
They could have pleased me by giving me a board that worked for more than 10 minutes.
They could have given me a better deal on a video card. Giving me $15 for trade in is NOT a deal.
AM I going to be a thorn in their butt? You bet. Might as well put me on ignore now, or convince the Mods to boot me.:icon_tiphat:
I haven't had any email contact. I have an address but didn't bother using it because this isn't personal.
Do you have statistics to share on the "Overwhelming majority" of good boards? I for one would love to see the fallout ratio.

hey peters i'll tell ya one thing.. i also feel his frustration b/c i've been going thru the same thing.. they even had me rma a brand new psu b/c they don't want to admit to thier faults.. and it was verified that the psu i sent in was working fine.. so if i were to have done each thing they requested i'd end up w/a brand new pc full of refurb'd parts.. put urself in either one of our shoes and tell me if this wouldn't make u feel like u got kicked in the groin.. especially when i went out of my way to be courteous and understanding and patient w/ each one of their employees.. i never got out of line w/ em.. and in turn i got no understanding, not even a descent effort on their part to give me a satisfactory resolution as the many others w/ the same probs.. that is very dirty business xfx..
and for the record.. it's all xfx's problem w/ thes 680i llt boards.. they sold em, made money, and didn't do anything to properly address their shortcomings.. what 's worse off is that they didn't even give a damn if they put u into a bigger hole just so they can find anotehr excuse.. and u wanna know how i know that this is all their products fault.. b/c i just bought an evga 750i ftw and don't have any of those probs that i was having w/ xfx.. no vid corruption, no nvlddmkm, etc.. and the best part about it is that after almost 5 months of having an expensive paperweight, my pc runs so beautifully now.. so this is a message to all u newcomers that are visiting the forums to do research on any xfx products.. save ur money and find a more superior product elsewhere.. u'll pat urself on the back in teh longrun..
literally it feels like night and day.. check it like this .. i owned an xfx product and had a horrible, horrible, horrible experience.. i buy an evga mobo and have it shipped 3 day and i receive it overnight in 1 day total.. i ordered it yesterday and it came today.. now if that's not a sign then what is.. lmao..
so all in all.. i think i owe xfx a very big thank you.. why u might ask.. b/c of them and their unsatisfactory company practice, i found a company that was worthwhile of my business.. i am completely satisfied w/ evga and i'm in no way ever going to buy an xfx product for as long as i live.. and as long as i have a voice, all my buds in teh gaming community will hear of this scrupulous corporate behaviour and follow suit.. maybe then when their profits start to decline and the fingers start pointing at one antoher will the corporate tree begin to shake and shed some of those unproductive leaves of mismanagement..

I don't know if you're aware it or not, but XFX and EVGA boards are exactly the same, except for the EVGA 790i FTW edition. Go compare them side by side. They are identical down to the last capacitor. I have intermittent problems with my EVGA 780i, but haven't had any trouble with the XFX 680i. Where did you order your 750i from? Cause unless it was direct from EVGA it has nothing to do with the shipping time.
And it is not XFX's problem with the 680i's, it's XFX's, EVGA's, BFG, and everybody else that sold the reference boards. Asus didn't produce reference boards, they just used the chipsets. If you want to blame somebody, blame Nvidia for those boards.
And I am sorry that you had so much trouble with the RMA process. I've seen people have much greater success when they visit our forums here first and interact directly with the techs.

i'm quite aware of the whole architecture and such.. and how they are comparable but yet they are very different.. xfx has been making mobos for how long.. and evga has been doing it for how long.. and yeah i did have probs but the extent at which they were addressed is deplorable.. i also understand where u're coming from w/ the whole blame nvidia but realistically they're only partly to blame.. especially since i didn't buy a strictly nvidia labeled board, no it was labeled xfx.. and if hte shoe fits, wear it pal.. u understand where i'm coming from i hope.. even if i went into a store and bought their product, if it has as many probs as it has, i'll bring it back to the store and will get a satisfactory outcome.. and that's b/c they will want to keep me happy so i can return w/ more business.. u c..
as far as the shipping goes.. it's more than just a coincidence.. lol.. i finally got fed up w/ xfx and ordered the new board and it's here in a day and i'm up and running.. i know u'll say it was the delivery and yada yada.. but either way it got here 1 2 3.. woops. more like 1.. so things are just meant to be is what i'm driving at.. anyways.. goombeye..
Well I'll be damned the refurb board posted first shot!
That was with the P4 I had out of a friends system, I'm not ripping mine apart again.
Guess I'll throw it in the closet until I update the Bozozputer after the new year.
