Ok, before I go spending some hard earned cash, is the on board sound card any good? or would I be better buying say an Asus xonar card? thought experiences below please :icon_tiphat:

It's alright, But if your an audiophile you might want to go with the Xonar. You can always try out the 790i board first and then see if you want to upgrade to a sound card.

I recommend the PCI version or the Xonar instead of PCIe 1x cause the slots are too close to the 1st 16x slot. This can cause heating issues with your graphic card if your a gamer. Beside I read there is no difference in the PCIe version of the Xonar and regular PCI.

EAX is emulated with Xonar but still very good sound but emulation can never be perfect. I'm currently waiting on my PCI version to come since I didn't realize the PCIe 1x is too close to my video card.

Had thought about that version, but have heard that it interferes with the NB cooling fan because of its length. (have to use the top slot because running SLI) Unless anyone else is running this and knows this isn't the case?
