July 7, 2008, Tokyo, Japan - Pioneer Corporation has succeeded in developing a 16-layer read-only optical disc with a capacity of 400 gigabytes for the first time in the world*1. Its per-layer capacity is 25 gigabytes, which is the same as that of a Blu-ray Disc (BD). This multilayer technology will also be applicable to multilayer recordable discs. This development has bolstered Pioneer's confidence in the feasibility of a large-capacity optical disc, which is expected to become necessary in the near future.

Nope, each layer is 25GB, just like Blu-Ray. They've just given it more layers.

Yeah, but the maximum layer I know of in a regular DVD are 2 (Dual-Layer), so 16 layers are definitely awesome and you must admit that 400GB is a quite big capacity. :jawdrop:

Yeah, and I'm personally NOT going to buy any Blue-Ray DVD-Reader/Writer until prices will go down drastically...

I'd ike to see it on the open market but with a single Blu-Ray writeabe disk running as much as they are can you imagine what they want for a 16 layer disk?

Yeah, I'm not sure that a standard BluRay Player will support this kind of media (or to be exact, I'm pretty sure it WON'T). But I can only imagine which HD Games/Movies can be put on a 400GB Media! ;-)

Wow thats a big disc. Ive seen a concept to use discs as HDD's. Looks like they have the size they just need a way to make it able to rewrite a million times.
